Old Mill Collapses After Century of Use at Smithfield
The four story Sutherland grist mill on McIntyre Creek at Smithfield Station fell on Thursday May 15 at 2 p.m. after a hundred years of service. Built with water power later converted to steam and machinery, it stood as a landmark once busy with farmers hauling wheat to be ground into flour for shipment to Brilliant and New Orleans. The owner A C Sutherland had arranged demolition, but the roof collapse occurred first, ending a long era of local milling as modern mills and transportation outpaced these country mills.
