Miners Strike Expands in Belmont County
The Belmont County mining strike has grown to about 2,000 workers amid a stalemate between miners and operators. A Lansing meeting of state mine officials and operators failed to yield concessions, with operators saying a months long strike could be sustained and coal on hand may run out by September. Striking miners vow to continue until their wage demands are met and to fight for pay increases on soapstone and slate removal. The conflict began when the Lansing company cut last work, triggering a walkout by 600 workers and spreading to Wheeling and Blaine districts, affecting over 2,000 miners and likely lasting months.

Bonds in Connell to be set at five percent
Sinclair faces rejections from all parties and an ordinance likely at Connell's next meeting to set bonds at 5 percent as the sole sale option. Kilpatrick amendment to the Crosser act would let bond legislation be amended to five percent and allow advertising for sale before passage and publication. This could enable changing bonds from 4.5 to 3 percent and selling within 30 days. Current market bonds fund a filtration plant street improvements and a market house, but taxable municipal bonds under Ohio law have dampened demand.
