Mexico says it is ready to declare war on Guatemala at any moment. Relations are strained with militias at the Guatemala border. More than ten thousand Mexican troops are mobilized near the frontier amid a dispute over the extradition of General Lima. Insults to Mexican citizens in Guatemala are reported.
President Roosevelt delivered the address at the unveiling of a grand equestrian statue of General George B. McClellan in Washington. Generals Sickles and Howard followed with remarks. Dr. George McClelland of Philadelphia, nephew of the commander, unveiled the monument amid an elaborate military display.
Methodist missionaries report to the Philippine Commission that native officials impede their worship. In one city a mayor halted a prayer meeting and refused a license for continuation. Rev Johnston says he was imprisoned for demanding freedom of worship.
May 2 reports from the Whipple mine in Fayette county recount 11 dead and 4 injured after an explosion yesterday. Of 64 miners in the shaft, all are accounted for. many escaped by climbing a 450 foot air shaft ladder. Names include Robi Armstrong, Chas Burgess, Hutson Burgess, Ernest Kelley, Ira Kelley, Jas Wiley, Raleigh Tucker, Ed Smith, George Samper, Wm Wilson, John Thompson. cause unknown. Colorful note: the dead were unmarked, suggesting suffocation.
New York May 2. Actress Mabelle Gillman announced from the Gotham Hotel that she will marry I. Corey. She has denied requests from callers and issued a statement confirming the engagement for May 13.
Philadelphia May 2 Edward Gibson, a black man, attempted to assault Dorothy Paris aged 16. A mob gathered from cries of the girl and beat Gibson severely after he was captured. He was brought before Mayor Lawrence of Wanonah who knocked Gibson down when informed of the brutality.
George Calloway a structural iron worker was taken to the infirmary Monday died Tuesday and was buried Wednesday due to tuberculosis. He boarded with Mrs Donnelly on South High Street, owed 17 dollars, found a $20 note in his shoe, and had come four weeks ago from a California trip.
Post office inspectors added Frank O'Brien of Allegheny to the Chester Follansbee lottery ticket case. O'Brien, a former railroad police officer, was released on $500 bail for a Friday hearing. He and J Samuel Conkle are alleged principals in the interstate scam involving 30 Sierra Madre tickets from East Pittsburg to Follanshee West Virginia. Wamsley of Follanshee was the innocent recipient received in April.
A man identified by letters on his body as C. Stickle, a Pittsburg traveling man, leaped from the pier into the lake after fastening a 50 pound weight to his neck. The body was recovered later.
Mrs. Ella Robertson, a 45 year old dish washer at the Imperial hotel, was found dead early Thursday in a passageway near the kitchen stairway. She had worked seven years, was last seen at 11 pm, and police suggest a heart attack caused her death. Her body was taken to the morgue. she had no known relatives in Steubenville.
Chicago labor unions abandon plans to file articles of impeachment against President Roosevelt. The legal committee says proceeding would be useless while the Senate is filled with his political allies. Ten thousand workers instead endorse an open letter to the party and working class, pledging support for Moyer Haywood and Pettibone.
A Dixie flyer on the Centra Railroad of Georgia was wrecked near Atlanta on May 2. Reports indicate one man was killed and a member injured with several others fatally affected. Authorities were investigating the cause and tallying casualties.
East Liverpool reports the Brenneman lease well is increasing output from 250 to 300 barrels per day and is the region’s largest producer since John Rays’s famous 500 barrel well near Hookstown. I Allison of Chester and Bartley Porter plan a West Virginia chartered company to develop a big oil territory opposite Brenneman at Arroyo, spanning seven hundred acres. The field appears highly valuable.

A Tri-State Traction wreck occurred on Market Street Bridge when a new car brake failed on a down grade. The crash involved a special car carrying Uniontown and Steubenville teams plus city officials and press. No injuries occurred as passengers jumped to safety. the front end of a small car was smashed and the new brakes expected repairs after the park trip.
Joseph Behr, about 55, was struck and killed at the Dillonvale No 2 mine on Wednesday night while walking on the tipple. Coroner Campbell ordered an inquest today as the car shift failed to hear or see him before the accident.
Two killings occurred in Chicago this morning. Victim Chas Lindley, 23, was shot through the heart during a dispute with foreigners. J E Burgeson killed Alfred Beaumont, a restaurant cook, with a pistol after Beaumont attacked him with a butcher knife. Burgeson was wounded and likely to die.
Three thousand fans braved winter weather to watch Uniontown Bunch shut out Herb Jackson. Final scores listed: Steubenville 4, Uniontown 6, Braddock 3, Washington 2, Charleroi 8, McKeesport 7, Zanesville 0, East Liverpool 6.
In a packed League Park, Steubenville defeated Uniontown 4 to 0 as Herb Jackson dominated on the mound. Jackson allowed four hits, five walks, and one hit by pitch while striking out several Uniontown sluggers, with support from sharp Stubber fielding and timely batting in early innings.
