Memorial Day at George's Run Cemetery Honors Governor Willis
Occasional rain did not dampen a 5000 strong crowd at George's Run Cemetery for a grand Memorial Day in Jefferson County. Governor Frank B. Willis delivered a lengthy address praising Civil War heroes, fraternal orders, and the living who should model virtue, thrift, and patriotism. The parade, led by Grand Marshal Henry Becker, featured numerous fraternal groups and Veterans, with bands from Mingo and Toronto. The ceremony included prayers, flag decorations, songs, and tributes to soldiers of 1861 through 1898, while speakers urged charity toward the living and reverence for those who served. Weather and crowds highlighted community pride and the enduring bond of national memory.
