Terrible fire claims three lives in hillside residence
A deadly blaze at the Biekse building corner Thied and Witkin streets early Monday morning killed Ira Hillman's wife Kate 25 and daughter Katherine 2 and Elizabeth McCoy 18. Neighbors and firefighters heroically searched dense smoke but all three bodies were recovered. Coroner to hold inquests as other residents fled and suffered smoke and water damage.

A probable elopement ended in disappointment at Probate Judge Donley’s office this afternoon. Barnhouse, 24, a farmer from East Springfield, Jefferson County, brought his bride-to-be Lucy M. Gault, 18, from Jefferson County. The judge declined to issue the license, and the couple left to consider marrying elsewhere or later in a less romantic setting.

Robbery at Old Seminary Apartment House
A robbery at the old seminary apartment house last night saw George Sparable allegedly break into a roomer’s trunk and steal about $70. Sparable is missing and was said to have worked on the Mingo Traction line and roomed at the seminary. Clarence Wagle was arrested and returned to Waynesburg on a charge from a local woman. John Overend remains in custody for theft from Wolf Run store, with discharge possible if officers do not appear. Kate Cooper and Bill Briggs were taken to Canton workhouse for the holidays. James Overend was fined and sentenced to 30 days in the workhouse for attempting theft at the Wolf Run Coal Co. mines. Samuel Baysinger witnessed.

A Friday morning clash at John Hanna's Cadiz home involved Mrs Mary Hanna and Ada Jackson a Black domestic. Hanna struck first and Jackson returned with a blow shattering the woman's nose prompting sensational talk among Cadiz society. Mrs Hanna had previously been shot by a jealous woman in Cleveland years ago.
