Altamont Traction Line Abandoned For Safety Reasons

The State Railroad Commission ruled the Altamont hilltop line unsafe to operate without major reconstruction. It dismissed E J Bickerstaff’s complaint, noting the new Steubenville to Mingo line serves Altamont better, with 1,200 feet between lines and seven percent grades replaced by safer seven percent grades on two shorter segments. The Altamont line carried 650,000 passengers yearly but is obsolete, and public welfare favors the updated route despite private land contracts.
