In a perilous desert ascent near a Sioux hunting ground, Bob Hampton and a young woman struggle to reach safety after a brutal standoff. They endure hunger, heat, and fire while a pursuing band of Sioux ranches draws closer, culminating in rescue by cavalry and a tense, uncertain future.
The Miners' Home in Glencaid, a rare sawn plank hotel with cracked walls and creaky stairs, faced competition from the glass front Occidental saloon across the street. Widow Guffy ran the house with a firm hand but banned liquor, keeping intoxicants out of the sacred precincts despite guests bringing them inside. Mr. Hampton had a series of eventful weeks in his past.
