Sterling Township High School observes Senior Recognition Day on November 10 with seniors dressing in Sunday best and underclassmen showing them respect. The final home game against Morrison features a band march and senior honors. a postgame dance is undecided with later announcements planned.
A summer remodel of the old high school, now used as a junior high, converted lockers halls to open space, repurposed rooms from chemistry to projection and art, biology to music, and library area to band chairs, with 300 students benefiting from expanded passageways and updated facilities.
The student council met in the band room on Thursday October 12. Forty members with advisor Miss Krughoff discussed establishing a school supply center providing pencils and paper and considered adding a traffic court. Officers were President Chuck Cole and Secretary Barb DeZuba. The group then shared notes in home rooms.
Approximately eighty seniors were chosen as monitors for the 1950 51 school year, nine per period, based on their study schedules and free time. A first week meeting covered observed careless acts and prevention. Each home room received a monitor to direct, locate lost articles, collect attendance slips, and provide information.
The home room period runs from 8 20 to 8 45 for guidance and open discussion. Students may voice opinions on school activities or personal problems while home room teachers offer advice. The newly elected F.F.A. officers include President Don Lester and Vice President Lyle Dirks with Ronald Ricklefs as secretary and Raymond Ricklefs as treasurer. A soil conservation contest on October 2 featured Don Lester Bob Forward and Howard Ratsloff. awards were presented at the LeClaire Hotel in Moline on October 16 with competitors and their fathers in attendance.
The Hi-Tri club met on October 12 starting with a pot luck supper. Norma Miller spoke on the group's aims, followed by a brief talk and demonstrations of modern dancing by Bob Green. Green will teach Hi-Tri girls and Hi-Y boys for six weeks starting October 21 at the YWCA basement, from 9 to 10 PM, for $1.50.
A November schedule lists events from November 4 state finals to a Thanksgiving break. Student leaders and club officers are named for many groups including the Red Cross Council with a representative from each home room and Miss Barnes as Red Cross instructor. The council will meet soon to elect officers and plan the year.
Seniors plan a Hallowe'en dance titled Cum Bum at the Coliseum on October 28. Music by Tom Slothower's Orchestra. Admission one dollar per couple or sixty cents per person. WPA event with gals paying all bills. Co chairs Katy Puskedra and Bob Peugh lead committees for decoration floor show publicity and refreshments.
The annual Homecoming dance took place October 6 at the Coliseum with the Sportmen's Orchestra playing from 10:00 to 1:00. The event featured blue and gold decor, a floorshow about Ernie Itchell's football team, and led by chairs Marlene Steadman and Bob Galloway with extensive student committee participation.
