An editorial notes higher living costs and potential military service but emphasizes freedoms and institutions Americans enjoy. It contrasts American liberties with totalitarian regimes and urges gratitude for worship, education, speech, press, and democratic assembly.
One month into night school sessions, adults from offices and factories fill front parking on Mondays and Wednesdays. Classes include typing, shorthand, business English, bookkeeping, social security payroll accounting, and shop subjects. Instructors include Miss Hunt, Miss Peterson, Miss Schick, Mr. DeVoe, Mr. Robbins, Mr. Small, Mr. Whaley, Mr. Hoogeveen, Mr. Moore, and Mr. Timmons. National defense training runs Saturdays from 1 to 7 pm.
A vocational poll from Sterling Township High School dated October 21, 1941 shows 65 girls employed with an average salary of seven dollars monthly and 109 boys earning an average of 15 dollars. Jobs include newsboys N Y A office and sales work with 57 other students in miscellaneous positions. 15 express job dissatisfaction.
Five FFA students accompanied by Mr. J A Twardock traveled to Kansas City for the National Judging contest. Sterling meat team won first with 561.3 of 600. Ray Mellett earned top individual honors with 197.2. Milk team placed sixth. Keith Wells finished eighth overall.
Twenty eight seniors have been appointed to the 1942 yearbook staff. The new board includes editors, business manager, photography, layout and advertising, circulation, typists, and sports editors with a larger roster than prior years.
Rotary Day highlights juniors picked by Lyle Wilcox with Miss Harriet Echternach. Three senior boys attend three Rotary meetings then a new trio takes over. This year’s selected juniors include DeVere Leonard Wayne Friedrichs Gordon Behrens Ted Kontos Keith Benson Jack Chapman Dean Dahlgren Harry Woodyatt Charles Miller Leo Megli Rayy Mellott Earl Nelson.
The senior class stages Moss Hart and Kaufman comedy in three acts with Jack Chapman portraying head of the quirky family and LaVonne McNeil as Alice Sycamore. Wayne Friedrichs, Doris Overholser, Keith Benson, and a cast of colorful characters headline the production with a twenty five cent student and thirty five cent adult admission. Dress rehearsal for students occurs Wednesday afternoon December 3.
