Debaters Reach State Finals at Champaign Meet
Sterling debaters earned a place in the state finals at Champaign on April 7 and 8, defeating Peoria Central and Am boy while losing close rounds to Kewanee and Pekin. Galesburg and Pekin placed first and second. Sterling's team included Terry Brooke and Mike Sellett for affirmative and Barbara Bogott and Bill Wagner for negative.

Sterling's speech department placed sixth among twenty eight schools at the Sectional Individual Speech Contest in Alexis on March 11. Several students earned fifth and fourth places in various events. Geneseo topped the results with Pekin second and Rock Island third.

The Robed Choir offers an Easter concert on Palm Sunday March 26 at St John s Lutheran Church Sterling at 4 00 p m The program features Latin Tenebrae Sunt Handel Messiah Olivet to Calvary and pieces from Beholds Host St Theodulph s Hymn and other sacred works with Diane Eshleman as pianist and Sherry Crofton Barbara Bogott soloists and a junior underclass choir in two antiphonal numbers Joyful Hosanna and St Theodulph s Hymn The event invites public and students. Five Sterling Township High School students participated in the Twelfth Annual Mathematics Contest sponsored by the MAA and the Society of Actuaries.

Nurses Tour Hospital at Community General in March
The Future Nurses Club met on March 7 at 7 16 p m in the lobby of Community General Hospital for its monthly meeting. Mrs B Kilhefner RN led a tour of operating rooms morgue nursery and therapy room. Refreshments were served by Judy Reitzel and Bettie Wilson. Mrs Evelyn Hawkins awarded membership pins.

Mass Concert Recalls The Music of America at SHS
On Monday evening March six the SHS Music Department presented its annual combined concert with an American theme. Directed by Jack Schuler and William Ton, the program opened with the Star Spangled Banner and featured the Mass Chorus performing God of Our Fathers and several patriotic numbers. The Golden Warrior Band, led by G Jack Schuler, played Totem Pole and Moods Americana, followed by the Sousa Liberty Bell march. Three Spirituals were sung by the Rober Choir Dark Water Dont Be a Weary Traveler and Rock a My Soul. The finale included American Salute based on When Johnny Comes Marching Home and Yankee Doodle Boy by George M. Cohan.
