Vocational Programs Described at RFHS

Sherry Bouma reports on cooperative vocational programs for Sterling and Rock Falls seniors. No special training is required to enroll in the D. E. program beyond a willingness to learn and work. Practical skills like bookkeeping typing and business math aid on the job. Students can often choose their own placement and may register for D. E. at the end of junior year, entering a September class if accepted. Mr Brelsfoard notes the programs offer broad opportunities due to educational cooperation.

Sterling High Leads In Santa Clara Math Contest

Sterling Township High School sent students to the 9th annual University of Santa Clara High School Mathematics Contest. A total of 434 students participated nationwide. Sterling students performed well with eight of ten in the upper half and three in the upper 20 percent, led by Mike Bere Pat Haberer Gary Keperling and John Miller. Others included Brett Cassens Roger Johnson Randi Nygaard William Parks Scot Player and John Wheeler.

Diversified Occupations Grows at Sterling High School

The program blends school and work to give students a head start in their field. Juniors age 16 with good attendance and aptitude train 15 hours weekly at the job, plus 40 hours total with school training. Since 1962 Illinois expanded DO programs, now the largest in the state at Sterling.

Guidance Office Test Schedule At STHS

Sophomores juniors and seniors prepare for testing time at STHS. The National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test for juniors is February 25 in the multi purpose room at 9 00 A.M. Sophomores take the National Educational Development Test at the same time. Seniors not yet taking the SAT should do so on March 4. ITED for sophomores runs March 7 and 8.
