Senior students will hold an all school semi formal Cupid's Cotillion on Saturday February 19 at 8 30 p m in the gym. Billy Waite's orchestra will provide music for dancing in a decorated hall. Co chairmen Jean Bressler and Shirley Butler lead committees for refreshments decorations floor show programs advertising and tickets with numerous student helpers named.
The Future Farmers of S H S plan their annual father and son banquet on February 29 featuring humorist Dusty Miller. Robed Choir and high school band perform, with awards for Sterling F F A members. Three Sterling boys head to Farm and Home Week at the University of Illinois February 8 to 10, funded by Lions Club and F F A. Local team losses to Morrison noted with good spirit.
The Sterling Township high school band plans its annual spring concert with J J Richards directing. A date and full program will be announced soon. Soloists Myron Shannon Paul Scharfenberg David Paulson and Virginia Gelaz are expected to appear with Attila on the program as arranged by Richards. The group will also perform at remaining home basketball games.
Sterling Township High School featured on WGN Citizens of Tomorrow program highlights include 1941 42 adult courses aiding war effort 30 years of evening classes 25 000 quarts canned last summer and 500 mechanics placed in defense work. Roscoe Eades speaks praises school for contribution and leadership. Principal Maxwell leads quiz and students perform choir and songs amid audience of Wallace and Central Schools and local families.
The Sterling debate squad sails to Augustana College Rock Island for the annual tournament. Team members Cathryn Detweiler Mary Zigler Don Dewey Bob Swehia and Audrey Lahman Bob Bulmer with coach Jerome Robbins prepare after a Mendota practice on January 22 and aim to perform before teachers at Morrison February 11 and compete February 12 in Mendota.
Shirley Butler was chosen to head the Bonds and Stamps sale for the second semester replacing Donna Veck. Committee members include Janet Fermnson Donna Yeck Johnnie Stager Mary trock Jeannette Dravis Vera Bley Susie Janssen and Virginia Bailey. On January 26 the senior girls sold 312.65 in bonds and stamps, bringing total sales since September 22 to 4235.10.
Sterling high school to display a 3 by 5 foot service flag honoring alumni who served. Proceeds from the December 18 Sterling Rock Falls dance funded the flag, which will bear a central blue star and a number denoting those in service. A four member committee led by Janet Swartley will compile a complete list of service men and women.
Donna Yeck was chosen as the outstanding member of the 1944 graduating class to be Sterling High School's contribution and "Citizens of Tomorrow" honor roll.
The senior memory book for the class of 1944 will be issued next spring with editors in chief Joanne Stager and Dorothy Stewart. The staff includes Cathryn Detweiler as assistant editor and Mary Strock as music editor, among others.
Thirty five students appear on the second semester honor roll for perfect A marks.
