Northwestern Alumnus Joins Naval Officers Training Corps
William Lindenberger of Chicago has been selected as a member of Northwestern University's naval officers training corps. The unit, one of six college naval units nationwide, admits up to 200 students who must pass a naval academy level physical test and complete intelligence exams. Lindenberger, 34, a Liberal Arts sophomore, is Delta Sigma Pi member and former Sterling Township High, and will participate in a future man-of-war cruise after completing the program.

The Black Cat Ball organized by the junior group led by Marge Jones was a big success. Beverly Anderson oversaw decorations turning the gym into a barn dance with wagon wheel lanterns and hay bales. The Mendota orchestra provided music while Paul Puckett sang a solo. Community singing followed as apple cider and doughnuts were available and dancing lasted until midnight.

Dr Luther Gable addressed the Science Club’s first meeting in the gym on radium. He explained its discovery in pitchblende and the processing to pure radium, noted that displays mix radium with uranium, and warned of its powerful energy. The highlight was the world’s largest radium display valued around 6000 dollars. The newly formed Science Club, led by DeVoe, met with strong attendance. Rose Marie Anderson was president, Bob Shaw vice president, Paul Hubbard secretary treasurer.
