Florence Sein thanks for relief materials sent to Bunker Hill after a devastating storm. Teachers report unpacking school supplies to pupils, repairs underway, and a resilient outlook as students return to class despite damage.
The Sterling bond election is over and the public response inspired support for a sound educational program. The board is authorized to build and will seek bids, while the architect acts promptly to contact construction concerns. Students who helped are thanked for their efforts and success.
The Sterling Township Robed Choir and Township Band directed by Mr. Tonkin and Mr. Myers earned first division ratings in a recent contest. On April 3 twelve first divisional ratings were awarded in solo and ensemble, and on April 10 both Band and Robed Choir took firsts, totaling sixteen first division awards from fourteen entries.
Miss Barnes reports gratitude for gifts to the school from the Junior Red Cross and Roger W Runft Red Cross Director. He lists how the donated funds were spent including materials such as Arnpecsateeteans, paper plates, model airplanes, airplane dope, orange sticks, modeling clay, jump ropes, and glue.
The Top Hat Junior-Senior Prom will be held June 2, 1948, in the Coliseum with Don Bright and his orchestra. Don Wink serves as chair with Ruth Moreland as co-chair, and committees led by Gwen Turnroth, Bertha Peterson, Don Scharfenberg, Mimi Sterenberg, Peggy Beach, Jack Duis, Vioda Erb, Jeanette Over, Dale Long, Bett Marken, Virginia Wolf, Jeannie Aper, Pat Geibel, Betty Fenner, Chuck Pippert, and Larry Denty.
On April 3 and 10 S H S choral groups performed in district contests against several schools. Robed Choir Boys' Quartet Girls Ensemble and soloists all earned first place. The Girls Ensemble and Boys Quartet will advance to the State Music Contest at Taylorville on April 30.
The Robed Choir Girls Ensemble and Boys Quartet perform May 11 at 8 p.m. in the Coliseum with pieces from Brahms and Tchaikovsky, plus Russian and folk songs. The Girls Ensemble and Freshman Boys Ensemble follow on May 18 at 8 p.m. in the High School Gym featuring John Scharfenberg and Don DeWind selections.
This issue credits the junior staff for producing the Sterling Script and teaching fundamentals. Juniors learn to write headlines read proofs paste a dummy and prepare for next year’s leadership. The piece suggests a promising year ahead for the paper and its future seniors.
