May Green assists in the central office while a flurry of local travel and visits unfolds. Residents take trains and roads to Beatrice Des Moines Lincoln Peru and Fairbury as farmers report crop progress and a war effort tempo rises with parades schools and Red Cross activities.
The annual meeting records reconciled reports and elected Ed Hughes to return and M H Coons plus E R Dade to replace Crinklaw and Babcock. Last year’s spending was 5190 93 with running costs 4865 84 warrants 1308 63 and a year end balance of 26 46. The group voted to raise next year’s budget to 6500 and hire an extra teacher for grades as open.

Wm Keithley, his wife and two daughters with a Miss Mullet of Superior Nebraska stayed from Saturday to Monday at the home of N Willey and Henry. Mrs Keithley is sister of Mrs Willey and Mrs Harris. J W Easley learned from Rev Terrell of Peace River Saskatchewan that his 18 year old son AK was killed on the French battlefield May 3. Terrell once served as pastor of the local M E Church when Harold was a child. Alexandria Argus notes Steele City elders recall Rev Will Terrell and his wife Miss Cora Maxwell, both raised in the community.
