The Superior Oil Reynolds No 7 well in Reynolds field is good for forty barrels. Oil sand was reached at 1748 to 1753 feet, marking the seventh Superior well in the field with six producers. Plans call for a central power plant to pump the six wells, with machinery to be shipped immediately and operation expected soon.
Stamford Business and Professional Women's Club hosts an Employers Banquet on September 26 at the Stamford Inn. Mrs. Rita Culbreath will be toast mistress with Dr. Buelah Gould giving the invocation and Inez Lively presenting on The National Federation. Local businesswomen and guests will hear talks, songs, and program highlights about federation benefits and club service.
The Luther Rosamond home on Vanderbilt Street burned early Saturday night. No one was home. cause undetermined. Firemen extinguished the blaze. furniture and interior were ruined. Insurance coverage totaled 8250 on the building and 2500 on furniture. The site had seen a prior fire earlier in the year at a two story residence owned by C. G. Armstrong.
The First Baptist church revival, started last Sunday, draws large attendance and eight new members by Thursday, seven on profession of faith. Evangelist Sam Morris, under 30, draws youth with humor and earnest preaching. Services run daily at 10 a.m. and 7 30 p.m. through Sunday October 6.
Nine hundred sixty eight bales weighed by public weigher Fred Taylor by noon Thursday show a strong fall influx. A week earlier 525 bales were weighed, indicating about 75 bales daily. Ginned round bales reported by W. B. Harrison total 362, with two round bales equaling one square bale, bringing Stamford’s fall ginning to 1149 bales in all.
The Saunders-Myatt civil case in 104th District Court ended with a hung jury after a week of trial. Mrs. Saunders sought damages of 60,000 for herself and children over the death of her husband. The jury was dismissed Saturday after being deadlocked. follow-up dispositions include several other civil cases.
The permanent fire prevention committee for Stamford was announced by T. A. Upshaw of the Chamber of Commerce. Members include J. R. Pratt as chairman with City Council and Exchange Club representation, L. W. Johnson, Dr. Dallas Southard, Mrs. Geo Pryor, Miss Maude W. Cooze, and Mrs. R. E. McDonald. The article cites 1929 fire losses totaling about 35,000 dollars and warns of rising insurance costs due to reduced Good Fire Record Credit from 15 percent to 12 percent, risking higher premiums for residents.
Bernard Bryant, governor of the 41st District, Rota International, visited the Stamford Rotary Club Friday evening, meeting the club council. He plans another visit to address Rotarians at the regular luncheon. the council included officers, directors and committee chairmen with Harley Goble presiding in the absence of President Almus Blackwell.
The 11 o'clock service at St John’s Methodist Church will feature Rev. R. A. Stewart delivering the sermon titled God’s Appointments With You. There will be no Sunday evening services except the League due to revival at the Baptist Church.
Lueders Chamber of Commerce sent a total of 100 to Stamford Fire Department chief Dick Rowland in gratitude for aiding Lueders during a September 17 fire that destroyed the George Cafe and Smart Drug Store and damaged nearby firms. The gift includes four checks totaling 100 to be used at the department’s discretion.
The Texas Transcontinental Trail Highway Association re elected its entire staff of officers at the annual meeting of the directors in Stamford. Officers and directors elected to succeed themselves include Clifford B. Jones and others. new directors for Aspermont and Crosbyton will be elected later. The group discussed road improvements and paving plans from Fort Worth to Lubbock with bonds voted to pave several segments. Delegates attended from multiple counties and were hosted by the Stamford Chamber of Commerce at Stamford Inn.
Lucile Clendenin, longtime assistant publicity head for West Texas Chamber, elected publicity manager of the Corpus Christi Chamber. She will also handle publicity for the South Texas Chamber of Commerce third annual convention and starts October 1.
The Stamford city council passed an order to establish a city development board replacing the Stamford Chamber of Commerce. The board, effective January 1, 1930, will have 15 directors and a funded budget of about $9,000 annually, funded by a 20 cent per $100 valuation tax if approved.
Revival will be conducted by Rev. Fred S. Rogers of Central Presbyterian and Rev. M B Harris of Central Christian. It starts Sunday October 20 and runs two weeks with morning services at the Christian church and evening services at the Presbyterian church. Committees from each church will arrange music and other details.
Henry Andrews spoke on the Constitution of the United States during the Rotary Club meeting. L W Johnson led a quiz on the same topic and Ollie Webb of Orleans addressed the group on Rotary principles. A C Cooper outlined plans for a joint celebration of Highway No. 30’s completion with Anson and Stamford.
Rev. M. B. Harris was the principal speaker at the Exchange club gathering last Friday. He discussed the origin and development of the Constitution of the United States, calling it the most perfect document of its kind. David Platter of Waples Platter Co. was guest of George Zachary. A C. Kincaid of Baker Hanna Brothers attended as a visitor.
Anson and Lueders residents W. W. Simpson 63 and his son Jimmy 25 were killed when a derrick fell at the Bedford Carthage Stone quarry southeast of Lueders. The elder Simpson died instantly. Jimmy died after receiving injuries. Funeral for both held at the family home near Anson, with burial at Mount Hope Cemetery.
The American Legion changes the election time from two weeks before November 11 to the second regular meeting after the state convention each year. Nominations were made at the Monday meeting and the election will occur next Monday night, with installation at the Armistice Day Banquet on November 11. Local post members prefer installing on November 1 as tradition.
West Side Baptist Church invites all to a 11 a.m. sermon by Rev. Mr. Summers this Sunday September 29.
