Stamford designates October 4 to 10 as Fire Prevention Week in a proclamation by Mayor T. A. Upshaw. The document urges citizens to remove fire hazards, teachers to conduct drills, ministers and Sunday School leaders to emphasize fire safety, and schoolchildren to learn fire drill procedures.
Two day rainfall reached 2.40 inches at Swenson Brothers office while September totals rise to 5.51 inches. Rain delays cotton picking and mud worsens road conditions as West Texas stays wet. Stamford access roads become nearly impassable.
A brisk norther struck northwest Texas and Southwestern Oklahoma on Tuesday night followed by heavy rain Wednesday morning. Temperatures fell from 93 to 58 with 0.43 inch rainfall. many areas reported cold, dry weather ahead as rail points from Spur to Amarillo recorded 58 to 65 degrees and continued rain.
Sixteen hundred forty two bales of cotton had been weighed in Stamford up to Thursday before rain slowed the tally. If clear weather holds, the total is expected to reach about two thousand bales by Saturday, Joe R. Jones, public weigher, estimated.
Walker Smith Grocery Company begins excavation at Craig and McMillan for an 80 by 100 foot brick and concrete building with basement and mezzanine. F B Ramey, manager, says concrete pouring may start Monday and the firm aims to move in by January 1. The project is manager supervised, not under contract, cost not disclosed.
Amarillo Sept 23 Stamford selected as the next meeting place for the West Texas Druggists Association at the closing of its annual convention Wednesday. Resolutions were adopted opposing the federal tax on toilet articles and the group voted to request that the next examination of the State Pharmaceutical Board be held in Amarillo.
Miss Nell Malone of Wooten Grocery Co. was seriously injured when an automobile driven by Dr. S Calli coate struck her at the southeast corner of the square near Vaughn Bakers during lunch hour. She suffered cuts and bruises, was unconscious, then taken to the sanitarium and later to her home where she rested well.
Rev. D. B. Doak pastor of St. John's Methodist Church will deliver the convocation sermon for McMurry College at St Pauls Abilene Sunday morning at 11 oclock. He returns to his pulpit at St Johns to preach Sunday night on The Cause and Result of a Wicked Kiss.
Haskell County Fair announces a Band Contest on Friday morning October 2 with prizes of 100 for first 50 for second 25 for third in two age groups under and over eighteen months. A massed concert is planned for Saturday afternoon with potential radio broadcast. Grand Stand and bleachers to be completed for games and events October 1-3 1925.
Executive Board of West Texas Chamber of Commerce will hold its fall meeting in Lubbock on Wednesday September 30 starting at 9 30 a m chaired by R Q Lee with minutes from June 11 1925 and reports on traffic bureau and rate cases including Western Railway and Galveston New Orleans differential feature. The agenda also includes convention date selection Amarillo discussions new business congressional reappointment and notes on cotton seed and pink bollworm issues. A luncheon and visits at Panhandle-Routh Plains Fair and Texas Technological College opening are listed.
Manager J. C. Pinson of Southwestern Bell Telephone returns from a business trip to Dallas Fort Worth and other points in his territory.
Stamford High School football fans anticipate a tougher test after an 111 to 0 win over Munday. Albany High School visits Stamford Friday, and boosters plan a large turnout including Stamford Day at the Haskell County Fair with an auto caravan.
Haskell High School football team defeated Aspermont 19 to 0 in the season opener on the local gridiron. Coach F. J. Flewharty led Haskell with strong offensive and defensive plays.
Anson high school dominated Winters high school 44 to 0 at the West Texas Fair in Abilene. Griffith scored early in the game as Anson’s offense shattered Winters with strong off tackle runs and a stifling defensive line.
First Baptist Sunday School will observe Promotion Day with an 8 o clock service. After a half hour class period, departments will hold graduation exercises and diplomas will be issued for moving up. Fourty four BYP officers were installed. two new unions formed, totaling seven. A religious census is planned for October 4 as part of an Enlargement campaign. Visitation efforts include eighty visits to absentees and prospects.
The Day of Atonement begins Sunday at sundown and ends Monday. M Faverman of this city notes Jews fast 24 hours and attend all day services. Stores run by Jews close worldwide. in major cities like New York and London the impact is more noticeable.

The Railroad Committee of the Chamber of Commerce calls a mass meeting of Stamford citizens at City Hall Monday night at 8. The gathering, moved from Thursday due to bad weather, is open to all residents though the committee has not stated the agenda.
Mrs L V Ellington died in Brownwood on Thursday September 17 at 10 20 p m and was buried in Stamford. Born April 19 1846 in Maringe county Alabama she taught with her husband in Middle Tennessee and later in Alabama and Texas. A former private governess to Gen Joseph Wheeler she helped educate descendants of Alexander Campbell and Robert Donald. She joined the Methodist church as a child and was a devout Christian musician who supported church music. Funeral services were held at the Moore residence with Rev A L Moore, Rev D B Dunk and Rev J D Crockett presiding, Will McDonald singing. Ralph Duncan moved to Brownwood for a new position.
