Mary Florence Waggener argues health rests on proper nutrition rest clean habits and physical fitness. She emphasizes posture daily exercise water good teeth and mental moral balance as vital to preventing disease and promoting civic pride in American citizens.
In response to a Stamford Chamber of Commerce request the Western Union Telegraph Company lengthens hours in Stamford. The uptown telegraph office will stay open through noon and until 8 PM, three hours more than before.
Ellis Boyd of Fort Worth, district Rotary governor, spent the day in Stamford meeting directors and speaking at the noon luncheon. He then went to Hamlin to present the charter to the new Rotary Club, with about thirty Stamford Rotarians and guests attending the Hamlin banquet.
The semi annual library board banquet was held Friday evening at the Cooper Hotel. J. W. Johnson presided as president and Miss Blanche Baldwin spoke on library needs. Mrs S S Russell and Mrs R K Mahood praised the story hour and honored volunteers. Attendees included Mesdames K R, E K McDonald and others with several gentlemen also listed.
L W Johnson spoke to the Exchange Club on how the group can aid the High School athletic program. The club aims to boost football and other sports, improve playing grounds, and mobilize local support to make Stamford’s season strong with all games at Stamford ground.
The group held a fine meeting at Haskell despite rain and no St. Johns session. Mrs. Geo Pryor plans a Mission study campaign starting October first with next week’s topic Home Missions Facing New Situation. Publicity Supt notes upcoming Dollar Social at Mrs J H Rutherford's on Thursday night September 29.
Red Cross nutritionist Miss Mary Florence Waggener will hold office hours each Friday afternoon and Saturday morning in the City Auditorium building. She invites Stamford and surrounding communities women to consult during those times and attend adult nutrition classes, open to out of town as well as local residents.
L Schwarz and Company will be closed next Tuesday in observance of the Jewish holiday Rosh Hashana. The business will resume operations the following day.
Copeland Brothers vaudeville tent show arrives in Stamford for a week starting October 17 under the auspecies of the American Legion Sparks from the Camp Fire. The Tatapochon Camp Fire Girls report seventeen members at a meeting with new members Mary Turner and Pauline Thompson. Norma York and Vera Steely share health chart milestones. Jone Crow joins the group. Margaret Schaefer leads craft activities and advance plans for an all day event.
Funeral services for 71 year old Mrs Ruth Merriman were held Sunday afternoon at Highland Cemetery with Rev Ernest Harrison of Haskell officiating. W N Kinney of Stamford Undertaking Company arranged the funeral. She lived with her son in Houston for 17 years and died after more than six weeks' illness. She is survived by two sons Oscar Merriman of Houston Edgar Merriman of Brownsville and two daughters Mrs Edgar Adams of Hamlin and Mrs Erwin of Houston. Olivia Johnson travelled to Abilene to re enter Simmons University.
Wilbur Dean Brown aged one year, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Brown, lies in critical condition at Stamford Sanitarium after a broken arm became infected with gas gangrene. Doctor Dallas Southard identified the rare infection. Arm amputations were performed but mortification spread to the remaining stump, and doctors fear the child may not survive.
Rev WC Moffett will preach at 11 am Sunday on The nations of the world at sea amid economic, political and religious changes and America's duty as the world's wealthiest, most Christian nation. Sunday night topic is The Man Who Didn't Care. Attendance at services was strong with seven additions to the church.
M L Cope and Alton Brady of West Texas Utilities conducted an electric range campaign at Aspermont Spur and Jayton last week. Demonstrations were held in Aspermont and Jayton where most ranges were sold. Cope supervises installations this week.
About 2891 bales of cotton were weighed in at the Stamford yard by Wednesday night, per public weigher Joe R. Jones. Rainy weather and lower prices have slowed picking, with only about 800 bales received in the past week.
H W Woodson will open a Clarence Saunders chain grocery store on the west side of the square in Stamford between RK EE Cox Dry Goods and Yeatts Tailor Shop. Fixtures are arriving and repairs are underway. The Saunders chain operates in 17 states and will announce the opening date in The American. Dalton Wilson, infant son of Charlie Wilson and one of triplets born five weeks ago, died last Saturday afternoon. funeral by Rev K A Stewart at Highland cemetery Sunday at 10. Carlton was the second triplet to die. Clifton died Sunday September 11. the mother Mrs Charlie Wilson died September. the third triplet also mentioned.
Mies Etta Roebuck, superintendent of Aspermont city schools, has left for Italy Texas to attend the funeral of her father De L Roe buck. Dr Roebuck was formerly a practicing physician in Avera.
Brown's Cash Grocery has moved into a new brick building on South Ferguson Street. The store, now among the city’s most complete and attractive, will have a formal opening on a date to be announced. Proprietor J. W. Brown announced the plan.
Clay Markham Gethan Rogers and Granham Payne escaped serious injury after a Sunday evening crash on Hamlin road when all four tires blew. The trio suffered only bruises and scratches as help arrived.
J P Astin presented the Fire Department with a fifty dollar check this week in appreciation of the service by the fire boys during the recent fire in the Astin buildings on North Swenson avenue. Dick Howland, fire chief, said the gift was greatly appreciated.
P R Bettis of Stamford ends a 34 year clean service record with the Missouri Kansas Texas line. He began on the Texas Central, stayed through its Katy acquisition, and retires Sept 5 to focus on his own business. He may receive an honorary post, with H Peterson succeeding on the Stamford Reton local.
Conatser charged with the murder of Sheriff Smith and Deputy Owens in Fisher County near North Roby was arraigned in Roby after being moved from Dallas County jail. Case No 0021 will be heard in Jones County October 1, while Case No 1822 is set for Taylor County November 28. Additional deputies accompanied the defendant for safety but no mob action occurred.
M Faverman announces the store will close Tuesday September 27 in observance of Rosh Hashana. The Rev and Mia Widney of Shawnes Okla visit Stamford for a memorial at St Luke’s Church to Mrs Widney who died last year. A Fulbright and daughter Flora of Lagerton visited Stamford. Flora has been at North Texas Teachers College and will teach in a rural school. Burnett Leudder, son of Le and Mrs Lewdder, left to attend Tech College in Lubbock. Mrs Scudder of Leeders recovering from an operation at Stamford sanitarium. Mr and Mrs Brownfield and children visited Hamlin.
A Sunday afternoon singing event at Lene Hoedeker’s drew a large crowd while a party at J. P. McIntyre’s drew many youths Saturday night. Local residents including Mr McKenzie and the Fourqureans hosted visits, with the beef club achieving 3,444 pounds of meat over its season.
Work starts on two Astin buildings on the east side of the public square near Piggy Wiggly. One 26 by 100 foot and the other 140 by 100 foot, with a Helpy Selfy grocery to be run by A. Zachary in the larger unit. Smaller building and other projects underway include rebuilds on Pergamon Street and four more brick business fronts, plus progress on Swenson Avenue and Ferguson Street structures.
Mrs and Mrs M D Cir een of Albany were guests in the city Sunday. Mrs York and children went to Wichita Falls to meet Mr York returning from Vancouver visit. Mie Tiale Middleton had her tonations removed at the hospital. Jack Hobbine of Aspermont is re admitted at the sanitarium. Miss Blanche Carter to Sherman to enter Austin College. Miss George Flournoy accepted a position as instructor at Baylor College Belton and will serve as hostess in a dormitory. Mr and Mrs Joe Yantix went to Sweetwater to be with Mr Yantix brother seriously ill. Me Mengings drove them to Sweetwater then to Hosene. Mr and Mrs Miller visited Abilene. Mrs T D Woodham called to Mississippi. Woodham took her to Fort Worth. W W Reed purchased J A Broadwell home on Welty avenue and moved in. Mr and Mrs J W Adcock and daughters of Post community visited Stamford. A son and daughter of the Adcocks left for Abilene to enter McMurray College. Cash Wilman left for Abilene to enter SimEons University. Mrs Tillman Caldwell of Dallas was guest of relatives last week. Misses Kathryn Tadlock and Mary Kelle Booth will attend. Mrs A J Bell had a serious operation in a German hospital, now improved.
