Jones County Commissioners Court approved a 1966 budget totaling 608128.36 with a 70 cent tax rate, allocating funds across jury, road, and general purposes. Salaries rise about 5 percent, districts plan wage budgets, and highway and lateral funds support operations amid oil activity declines.
Stamford officials announce title to the old Bomar Heights school and its block passes to the city. The building will be used for storage for now while the land is set aside for park use. A Little League diamond is included in the current area.
Services for Clarence Warda Cox 64 longtime Stamford resident were held Sunday at Kinney Funeral Chapel with Rev. Jack Southerland officiating. Cox died Saturday at his home from an apparent heart attack. He was a concrete and tile contractor. Burial was in Highland Cemetery. Born July 2 1901 in Bagota Texas he married Jewel Strickland Aug 19 1922 in Bagota and moved to Stamford in 1929. Survivors include his wife two sons Elmer of Fort Worth and Elbert of Lubbock seven grandchildren two brothers B W Cox of Lockney and B J Cox of Elkview CA one sister Mrs Mable Adams of De Kalb and his mother Mrs C P Welch of Stamford. Pallbearers were Lawrence Crider Henry Skiles Jimmie Dippel Murry Schroder Bogan Rea and David Jones.
The Stamford Lions Club will launch its annual light bulb sale next Tuesday with a downtown morning sale and a door to door sale at 7 p.m. Profits fund glasses for local underprivileged children. Clyde McMahon chairs the sale.
A Stamford Hospital District delegation urged the Hill Burton Committee of the Texas Department of Health to grant $500,000. Members included J. F. West A. C. Humphrey Dr. Ike Hudson and Jack Lather. The group cited a 46 year old hospital and plans for a new 50 bed facility near the current site with land negotiations south of the hospital.
Rainfall stayed light but Stamford Lake's level remained near spring values. West Texas Utilities readings show 1409.42 on Sept 1 versus 1409.80 on Apr 30, with spillway at 1414. City water use this year stays below 1964 totals, though hotter, drier weather could raise demand later.
The Stamford Garden Club opens its season with a Spice and Herb luncheon at Mrs. M. J. Sublett’s home. Guest of honor is Mrs. Reaves Hickman of Albany, governor of District VIII, Texas Garden Clubs. The year’s study, A Pocket Full of Miracles, focuses on gardening miracles.
M F E Ruby Jr Inc of Austin begins 11.7 miles of highway work on FM 2746 and FM 2834 totaling 202326.34 dollars. FM 2834 runs 8.1 miles from FM 1661 north of Tuxedo to U S 277 in Stamford. FM 2746 spans 3.6 miles from FM 126 south of Hamlin to the existing pavement 12 miles southwest of Anson.
Absentee voting in the special city election to fill Alderman Place 2 begins Sept 23 in Stamford and runs until three days before the Oct 12 election. One candidate, F E B Harkins, a local furniture store owner, will appear on the ballot after Herschel Kelley resigned to move to Austin. The seat’s term ends at the regular April election.
Fire Chief R. K Rowland of Stamford travels to Abilene this week for Fire Marshals Conference sessions.
The first meeting of the Oliver Street P TA will be Tuesday September 21 at 7 30 PM in the Oliver Street School cafetorium. Bill Gregory president and O N Smith principal will speak and present the coming year. All parents are invited and urged to attend.
The joint Sept meeting of the Young Home Makers and Young Farmers at the Ag building discussed the area convention. Don Walker was elected area treasurer at the Brownfield meeting attended by Weldon Holbrooks Bobby Jones and other officers.
A string of break-ins in Stamford this week, likely by juveniles, damaged property and cash registers across First National Bank, Tom's Restaurant, Huston Hardware, Longley's Food Store, and City Hall rest room. Police investigate with evidence pointing to youths.
Snyder comes to Stamford Bulldog Stadium seeking its first win of the season after a 23 12 opening loss to Andrews. Snyder’s veteran and junior players fill a rugged line while Stamford adjusts on both sides of the ball ahead of the 5 AA district clash.
Wilber Gruben of Rotan and Texas Tech graduate takes the role of field service advisor for Rolling Plains Cotton Growers Inc. He holds an entomology degree and has farm experience, with prior work in chemical fields and soil testing. Based in Sweetwater, he will assist gin managers and cotton producers across the Rolling Plains region.
