Jones County Commissioners cut the coming year budget to 528000 from 834000, with about 200000 for right of way in 1963. Tax rate drops to 70 cents, allocations set for General 40 cents, Jury 2, Road and Bridge 98, and sales discussions note valuation rise to 31 million but expected collections at 85 percent.
City council discussed selecting a concession operator for Lake Stamford but reached no decision. Proposals included inviting bids and advertising in regional papers. The operator would run cabins, a trailer park, boat rentals, and a large business area with variable charges.
Lark Rorie daughter of E F and Mrs E F Rorie from Decatur and granddaughter of Mr and Mrs Marshel and Mr and Mrs Terrell stars as a majorette for the Decatur Eagles this year. She earned a trophy at a twirling school in Paris Texas during summer.
The General Services Administration will invite bids on September 11 for air conditioning and lighting at the Stamford post office. A telegram from Congressman Omar Burles Wednesday confirmed the plan. The project is set aside for small businesses with an estimated cost of 63000 and bids opening October 13.

Petitioners failed to appear at the Jones County Commissioners Court public hearing on the proposed herbicide law. Opponents attended, urging adoption while Judge Leon Thurman said no action would be taken and a new petition would be required before any further steps. The measure would license herbicide sellers and applicators, require bonds, and mandate farmer permits to use such chemicals.
The Stamford Junior Chamber of Commerce hosts a 7:00 p.m. Bar-B-Q at Stamford Country Club to welcome back Stamford Public Schools teachers. About 125 attendees are invited including teachers, spouses, Jaycees, and school board members. Mayor Roland Kelley will give a welcome, with Lynn Young of the Jaycees also speaking. After the meal, attendees may play 42 or bridge.
J C Hays of the Anson Farmers Home Administration outlined emergency crop loans for farmers and ranchers in growth-stricken counties. Jones County is included in eligible areas, loans bear 3 percent interest and require exhaustion of current credit and referral of the borrower. The qualifying borrower is placed on emergency credit until regular sources are regained, aiding those hit by poor crops and low cattle prices.
Mrs. Eric Greigeleit came home last week after a 13 day surgical stay at St Joseph's Hospital in Fort Worth. She reports feeling somewhat better and is improving at home.
Stamford efforts to improve roads around the National Guard armory move forward as caliche is procured. County Commissioner Tom Boyd offers men and equipment to load and spread the base material while Stamford city council approves up to 300 dollars for caliche and stockpiling costs at 10 and 15 cents per cubic yard.
Ben T. Ray a Stamford resident for years died last week in Mineral Wells. Funeral services were held Saturday at Restland Wildwood Chapel with Rev. Charles Fike officiating. Burial followed at Restland Abbey. Survivors include his wife a sister Mrs. Nettie Wallace of Lufkin two brothers Edwin Ray of Jasper and Roy Ray of New Mexico and several nieces and nephews. Ray was longtime at Stamford Inn and Mrs. Ray is sister of the late Mrs A C Cooper who with her husband owned the inn.
Stamford authorities report new Christmas decorations for downtown, stored in the Davenport building at McHarg and Ferguson streets. Mrs Lee Walker of the Chamber of Commerce says a fundraising drive for the season is planned next week, with $790 still needed of the $2375 total cost.
The Stamford Bulldogs host the Iowa Park Hawks in a non conference opener at Bulldog Stadium, both teams unblemished after Week 1. Stamford edged Quanah 16 12 while Iowa Park defeated Henrietta easily, with the Hawks favored to win District 2 AA. The Hawks start with two heavyweights among a mostly average sized lineup.
Henry A Hanks LaRowe named assistant to the publisher of the Stratford American, succeeding Vernon Stewart who resigned to join Southwestern Petroleum Company in Fort Worth. LaRowe, a UT alumnus and former Seminole Sentinel editor, has a background in trade publications, public relations, and U S Army public information work. The Hawks and Bulldogs prepare for Friday night with detailed lineups and coach comments.
Stamford citizens respond to a call for old clothing for the needy. Boxes received are stored in the old city auditorium until needed. Mrs. Lee Walker, Chamber of Commerce secretary, asks mothers to donate school clothing, and donors can call PA 38-2411 to arrange delivery.
The Stamford city council took no action on a proposal to rezone a section of East Hamilton Street to an industrial district. Property owners’ representative Albert Ivy appeared before an incomplete council, with Councilman M D Thompson absent, preventing consideration.
Stamford High School homecoming committee issues an open letter inviting exes to help create a welcoming event for the November 6 and 7 activities. A football game with Anson is on the first night. the Coleman game is canceled and the freshman game reverts to 7:00 p.m. with tentative plans by officers and local exes to organize.
MecMorries and Company completed a county wide valuation study in Jones County to set fair current market values. The update raised overall value from 25.5 million to 31 million, trimming the tax rate from 74 to 70 cents while distributing the tax load more evenly amid major changes across farm land and commercial properties.
Stamford Quarterback Club members will sell blue and white plastic megaphones at the game Friday night. The devices carry the printed schedules and will be sold for one dollar.
