Stamford American and local merchants sponsor a weekly football contest with three cash prizes totaling $10. Winners pick weekly top games listed on the football page and a tie-breaker score. If ties remain after the tie-breaker, duplicate prizes are awarded. first, second, and third receive checks of $5, $3, and $2 respectively.
Jones County farmers are urged to attend a Sept. 6 7:30 p.m. meeting in the county courtroom Anson. Fred Elliott Texas A M College cotton work specialist will discuss defoliation latest products calibration of harvesting and other guidance for the season.
A 1958 Ford stolen Monday night from Oscar Hargus Service Station was found burned five to six miles southeast of town. The car owned by W. W. Curley was spotted on a country road by Olan Goodwin as he came to town.
Area peace officers examine building activity after thefts at Stamford Housing Authority sites. Inventory shows 11 aluminum windows (two small bathroom types), sheetrock, plywood insulation, and copper pipe stolen from low rent units.
Stamford police issued a warning to curb speeders and stop sign violators with the return of children to school. Chief B Q Cooper said officers will make arrests if speeding continues and stop signs are ignored. The department aims to maintain Stamford's traffic safety record and asks public cooperation.
Stamford and Quanah clash in the Indians stadium at 8 p.m. for the season opener. Stamford farmer A C Ross of Tuxedo ginned the first bale of the new crop at the Farmer's Co op Gin. The 466 pound bale came from 2100 pounds of cotton and yielded 960 pounds of seed. Ross credits moisture, staggered planting from April to June, and his 185 acre allotment for an generally average year. He notes June cotton faced cotton loopers and ongoing insect control.
The McDonald firm’s president, once district manager in Stamford, died unexpectedly Friday in Hastings Nebraska. He and his family lived on Reynolds Street during his Stamford tenure as the local store changed hands from Bryant Link Co. to McDonald. The store closed Tuesday morning for his funeral service.
Charles W. Johnson named manager of Kimbell-Stamford Wholesale Co new leader succeeds EF L Martin who resigns for a similar post in Wichita Falls. Johnson over 30 years with firm transferred from Lubbock. The Martins, Baptist, have no children at home and sold their house to Mr. and Mrs. Johnny Webb. Mrs. Martin plans to move in 10 days.
The American launches a new regular sports feature titled Footnotes to the Highlights by Jerry Sparks. The column will offer intriguing notes on the local sports scene and appears this week on page 7.
Stamford schools opened Tuesday with regular schedules across all grades. Total enrollment in three elementary, junior and senior high is 1251, with Reynolds showing an increase to 348 from 326 and Oliver at 231. The district notes some class adjustments and minor shifts in grade counts as attendance rises.
John Bil Oman of Stamford among nine vice presidents of the Texas Association of Future Farmers of America. He will join fellow officers at the annual state office training school beginning April 4 at the Lower Colorado River Authority building at Buchanan Dam to train elected officers for state leadership duties.
The Avoca High School hosting a watermelon feast Friday at 7 sponsored by the senior class. Adults may play dominoes and the children can enjoy games while everyone enjoys all the watermelon. Admission is 50 cents for an evening of fun.
Two building permits were issued this week for additions to existing homes. Total valuation estimated at 2500 dollars. Ciary Bates plans a 1500 dollar addition at 909 Texas Lawton Bates will be the contractor. Cecil Shamburger will build a 1000 dollar addition at 1014 Wells.
