First Oil Well Spuds on City of Stamford Property

The first oil test on the City of Stamford land and adjoining holdings took a successful spud Sunday afternoon. W. H. Peckham of Wichita Falls and F. W. Peckham of Stamford drill the spud at the east end of the long settling basin once part of the water system. Nearby wells include the Ungren & Razier No 1 J W Jennings, about 900 feet south of Stamford's location. Other new wells started this week include Reliance Oil No 1 Ida Crow, one mile west of Avoca. Sheldon Bros & DeArmen No 1 J H Huffaker, two miles south of Arwen, completed a hole and washed and plugged last week.

Exchange Club To Sponsor Postseason Benefit Football Game

The Stamford Exchange Club will sponsor a benefit football game between the Bulldogs and Stamford School ex students to fund night lighting for the field. A committee of Jim Stell George Zachary and Richard Lane will arrange details, with Ben Loop outlining the plan. The team will be honored at a banquet Friday night Nov 8 at the Home Economics cottage, replacing the Friday noon luncheon.

Play School Run By Home Ec Classes For Pre-Schoolers

For two weeks the Home Economics Ia and IIIa classes sponsored a daily play school from 8 30 to 12 30 to give girls exposure to guiding activities and planning meals for preschoolers. Death of 8 year old James Crow reported in Wichita Falls

Word reached that James Crow eight son of Mr and Mrs Jim Crow died at the family home in Kita Fa Fad, with relatives Alma Fuqua and W W Fuqua named in remembrance. The report notes Crow as grandson of Mrs J Crow and Mrs W Fuqua and mentions Alma Fuqua.

Dillon Dies In Fort Worth Funeral Held For J C Dillon

Mrs Grey and son Jay junior attended the funeral of J C Dillon uncle of Mr Crow in Fort Worth Monday. Dillon, an employee of Fort Worth and Denver Railway with headquarters in Stamford, died Saturday night in Fort Worth.

Organization meeting called for Will Rogers memorial club

The Will Rogers Memorial Fund in Rogers plans an organizational meeting Friday at 1 pm in the city council chamber to elect officers and launch a local chapter open to all contributors. Dues are five dollars for honorary and one dollar for regular members with several memberships already pledged. Contributions will be collected at local banks and business offices.

Passion Play To Be Sponsored In Stamford By Merchants

The Passion Play, a moving picture of the life of Christ, will be shown in Stamford on November 21. Sponsored by local business firms, the event supports churches and youth, with 6500 miles of travel, 1200 participants, and costs over half a million dollars. The Gospel scenes are filmed in the Holy Land and Egypt, aiming for an undenominational, authentic portrayal. Free tickets are available from sponsors, and Palace Theatre is leased 2 PM to 10 PM for the showing.

Stamford Bulldogs blank Munday Moguls 20 to 0

Stamford Bulldogs defeated the Munday Moguls 20 to 0 on the Mogul field Friday afternoon. The game featured a 44 yard drive after a blocked punt and scoring by Russell Watson and Doran. Stamford held the ball for longer drives and finished with 218 total yards to Munday’s 164 and 12 first downs to 10.

Big Reception Given Chevrolet In Local Showing

The 1936 Chevrolet models drew the greatest reception ever accorded a new Chevrolet in Stamford during a weekend showing at Hardy Motor Company. Cars were displayed from 4 p m Friday through late Saturday, with the first shipment delivered Wednesday and a new shipment expected on the road to arrive by Friday.

H. E. Williams Hurt At Cotton Oil Mill

H E Williams, an employee at the Stamford Cotton Oil Mill, suffered a broken leg below the ankle and severe leg injuries when he was caught in a line shaft around 10 o clock Thursday morning. He was taken to the Stamford hospital for treatment.

Red Cross Roll Call Opens In Stamford On Armistice Day

The Red Cross annual Roll Call starts November 11 and runs through November 28 in Stamford with a quota of 500 dollars. Ballots Mailed To Stamford Voters In Digest Poll

The Literary Digest ships secret mail ballots to Stamford and nearby residents to gauge support for the Roosevelt New Deal. Texas results will be tallied with other states, and 10 million people participate. Ballots are prepaid and counterfeit detection is built in. The poll also asks how voters backed in 1932.

Rain stopped cotton picking with a Tuesday night and Wednesday night total of 0.31 inch. Persistent damp weather for several days has halted the cotton crop gathering.

Armistice Day Observed As General Holiday In Stamford

Armistice Day will be marked as a general holiday in Stamford with stores and offices closed. The day features the Stamford Anson football game at Bull Athletic Field at 2 30 PM and an ex servicemen banquet at the American Legion hall at 7 PM. The school board will decide Thursday night if schools close for the holiday. It is the first holiday for business houses since last Christmas, aside from July 4 when the Cowboy Reunion was in session.

W A Thomas Dallas collector told Stamford Rotary Club that the government plans to make many citizens "stockholders" through a junior national finance program. He spoke for Henry Morgenthau Jr. and described baby bonds from $25 upward as a path for broad investment and government ownership.

Miss Laura Harris Claimed by Death in Morristown

Miss Laura Harris sister of Miss Anne Harris and Mrs. Kate Bean of Stamford died Sunday afternoon in a Morristown Tennessee hospital after about two months confinement. Her death followed a sister’s passing in Stamford four weeks earlier. She helped found the first Wesley House in Birmingham and served in Key West before retiring due to health. Burial was at Panthers Springs cemetery near Morristown beside her parents.

Albany Man Dies at Stamford Sanitarium

Ross Garman, a well known Albany resident, died at the Stamford Sanitarium Wednesday after several months of illness. He had been in the hospital for treatment at intervals over two months. His wife, who stayed by his side, was joined here Sunday by his mother Mrs. Mary Garman of Burbank Ohio.
