The first twenty Jones county numbers drawn in the national selective service lottery were led by 158 George Weldon Maxwell and 192 Orvon Lee Bruce of Stamford. Early Jones County resident J D Bruce dies at 88
Joel Dixon Bruce aged 88 died Tuesday at 9 30 am at his West Moran Street home after years of poor health. Funeral held Wednesday at 10 30 am at Kinney Funeral Chapel with Rev. Joel V Grimes officiating. Burial in Highland cemetery. Born in Texas December 17 1851 he moved to Jones County from Madisonville in 1905. Survivors include three sons W G Bruce Smith Bruce and Guy Bruce Stamford. a daughter Mrs Pearl Dunn Mohanks. 21 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren. Pallbearers were Andrew Griggs Wash Clements J W Stevenson Shired Parker Aut Dial and M W Bland. Grandchildren served as flower-bearers.

Six Stamford firefighters rushed to Aspermont on a Saturday night to quell a blaze in a local theater. Their quick, cool actions emptied the venue and prevented broader damage as the fire spread to two adjacent buildings. Fire at Farmers Cooperative Gin Causes 2500 Loss
Fire damaged the cotton house at the Farmers Cooperative Gin last week with total insured loss of 2500 dollars. The cotton house held 40 bales of cotton and 30 bales will be salvaged. The fire was confined to the cotton house and did not reach the gin proper. Fire chief Dick Rowland reported this week.
