Council Orders More Paving Under Third Street Program

Stamford City Council advances paving under the Third Street program with a June 14 public hearing for final passage. The latest ordinance covers Handlan to McKinley, Hobart to Oliver, Anson to Oliver, Williams, Moran, Orient and Campbell routes, totaling 39 614.55 with residents paying 26 613.02 and the city 13 00783. A second hearing precedes a one third assessment on each side of the streets, with Landon Ferguson Texas slated for paving at 12 094.15 total and 8 703.42 paid by property owners. Rev. Jerry Boles and others testified that improving nearby streets will raise property values. City Manager Steenson expects sufficient ownership to fund the project, noting many properties already have payments or liens.

Longley Named Outstanding Lion At Installation

Stamford Lions Club installation honors Bill Longley named Lion of the Year for leading the membership drive. Pete Shotwell as zone chair and deputy district governor led the ceremony. City councilmen will meet again Friday afternoon around 1 38 p m for the fifth Friday in a row. Regular meetings are held each first and third week.

Mimi Sue Olson of Avoca and Stanley Harvey of Leeders will represent Jones County 4 H Club in the Farm and Ranch Management contest at the state 4 H Roundup at Texas A M College June 4 5. Eighth Grade Graduation Certificates at Trinity Church

Seventy nine students received eighth grade diplomas Monday morning at Trinity Baptist Church. Principal J W Simpson presented the diplomas and class members performed musical numbers. Top honors went to Jennifer Crafty with a 97.28 average and Alice Andrews at 9.19.

Boy Scouts Awarded God and Country Sunday at St John’s

Six Scouts received the God and Country Award during the morning service at St John’s Methodist Church. Recipients were Bobby and Charles Anderson Sam Crockett Marvin Gregory Aubrey Griffin and Joe Smith Upshaw. Dr Burgin Watkins supervised the ceremony and presented badges to fathers for pinning. Scouts also pinned miniature awards on their mothers. All six belong to Troop 4 led by Scoutmaster Jack Griffin.

Full Armor of God Theme Sets Stamford Graduates

Bethel Lutheran pastor Dr. Hugo B. Haterius urged Stamford High School graduates to wear the whole armor of God during a baccalaureate service. He compared spiritual preparedness to astronaut suits and missile development, urging truth, righteousness, and faith as defense against adversity.

City Records .35 Inch Rain In Light Shower

A bright electrical display accompanied a front line brought 0.35 inch of rainfall to Stamford Monday night. Scattered hail peppered the city for about five minutes with hail stones reportedly as large as golf balls.

Sixty eight seniors received diplomas at Stamford High School commencement at St Johns Methodist Church. Valedictorian Marvin Ward Hinds and salutatorian Sara Tee Selmons posted top averages of 96.53 and 95.59. Several special awards were presented including Rotary Club Scholarships to Johnny Manuel Gonzales and Martha Jane Jones and the Strauss Scholarship to Jon Gary Link Jr.

Officer Seriously Hurt in Accident at City Intersection

Stamford police veteran Bascom Connally suffered a broken arm and ankle with facial cuts after being struck by a car driven by Bill Maddox 20 in Hamlin. Connally, 4 years with the department and former police chief at Hotan and Spur, was treated at Stamford Memorial Hospital as Investigator Oscar Armstrong questioned witnesses. Thunderstorm moved in shortly after the crash, though no rain was recorded at the scene.
