Open house set Sunday for Stamford rental complex

Stamford Housing Development Corporation invites the public to an open house Sunday afternoon at the new 1000 South Anson rental complex near New Braunfels Street. The seven brick veneer duplexes, funded by Farmers Home Administration, aim to welcome first residents by June 1 with four one bedroom units at 120 dollars and ten two bedroom units at 142.50 dollars.

Stamford Garage Sale Week Sparks Downtown Retail Event

The Stamford Chamber of Commerce announces a three day Regional Garage Sale event themed Gigantic Garage Sale as retailers across town participate June 1 to June 4. Jaycees Plan Hunting Safety Classes in Stamford

The Stamford Jaycees announce a hunter safety course starting Tuesday night May 31 at the Jaycee Building. Instructor Mac Thompson of Stamford will lead a one to two week program costing 3 dollars per person for youths 12 and older and interested adults. Enrollment details available at the first session.

SHS Graduation Set Friday Night in Stamford

Stamford High School plans to graduate more than 68 seniors in a Friday 8 p.m. ceremony in the school auditorium. Tim Jones and Leigh Davenport will perform and speak, with Tony Pierce as valedictorian and Russell Rosenquist as salutatorian, followed by awards and a SHS song encore.

Stamford Council Debates Lone Star Gas Case Continues

The Stamford city council held a Friday session with Lone Star Gas Company over an observed depreciation study. No action was taken as the matter was tabled while the gas firm appeals to the Railroad Commission for a larger rate increase. Bellamy outlined options including a waiver, a city study costing about 6220, or other settlements.

Taxpayers form plan to challenge hospital ruling

Residents from Leeders, Hamby, Nugent and Phantom Lake meet at the Lions Club to back an appeal of Judge Neil Daniel’s summation judgement in favor of Stamford Hospital District. A steering committee will organize a Jones County Citizenship Action Committee to influence elections and pursue possible state legislative action to disband the hospital expansion.

Local gin to be torn down and moved from Stamford

Jim and Louise Grantham announce Grantham Gin has sold to farmers near Quanah and will be dismantled and moved to Estelline in Hall County. Work on the plant and office may finish in about a month. The gin dates to 1905 with Swenson ownership and later changes.

Junior High Promotion Set for Friday at 10 A.M.

Stamford Junior High plans promotion in the high school auditorium at 10 a.m. Friday May 27. Parris Harrell conducts the recessional, Carol Rice gives the invocation, Lisa Darden reads the Gettysburg Address, and multiple students perform musical and spoken pieces. The eight eighth graders receive promotion certificates from Supt. Don Howard.

Avoca Baptist Church Announces Vacation Bible School

The Avoca Baptist Church will conduct its annual Vacation Bible School from May 30 through June 3. Registration is May 2 at 8 30 a.m. followed by a parade and refreshments at the Avoca Country Store. Sessions run 8 30 a.m. to 1 p.m. for preschool to junior high children with transportation on request.
