Crownover retires as WTU Stamford district manager after 40 years

West Texas Utilities announces Don Welch will succeed Russell Crownover as Stamford district manager. Crownover, later known for golf and piloting, leaves after more than four decades with WTU and a WWII Air Corps career. Welch, a Stamford native, has been assistant district manager since 1976 and will take over June 1.

Western art exhibit opens July at Stamford gallery

The Stamford Art Foundation announces the fourth annual western art exhibit and sale July 1 to 4 at the John Selmon Memorial Gallery on the Texas Cowboy Reunion grounds. A June 30 preview party features a western chuck wagon dinner. tickets are $10. The gallery opens daily at 9 a.m. Admission is $1 for adults and 50 cents for children. Thirty four noted artists including Wayne Kaize, John D. Free, Jim Hamilton, Peter Hurd, and Ron Stewart participate to benefit the West Texas Rehabilitation Center in Abilene.

Beard and mustache contest set for Stamford June

Stamford Jaycees sponsor a beard and mustache growing contest as part of Western Week. Judges will pick winners for longest and best and ugliest facial hair on June 30 at 8 p.m. Registration costs two dollars per beard and one dollar per mustache. Contact Rick Harrison to enter. A planned musical for Stamford Day Care Center also debuts June 30 on the square corner.

Old Time Fiddlers Contest at Texas Cowboy Reunion

The Texas Cowboy Reunion Association sponsors an Old Time Fiddlers Contest starting 9:30 a.m. on Monday July 4 at Roundup Halls rodeo grounds. Non professional and 50+ only. Contestants must register by 9 a.m. play two break-down tunes. Prizes: 50, 35, 25, 15 dollars. Free noon Chuck Wagon dinner ticket. Notify tunes in advance if possible.

Stamford Industrial Development Foundation Elects Officers

The Stamford Industrial Development Foundation held its annual meeting naming Fareed Hassen as president and Bill Glenn as secretary treasurer. Reed and Starr joined as new directors with terms set by lot. Harrell, outgoing president, reported on duplex apartments open house and a foundation loan funding space in the new dental clinic building on the Albany highway.

Stamford High School honors 64 graduates with scholarships

Diplomas were conferred on 64 Stamford High School seniors at Friday's commencement. Top graduates Tony Pierce Russ Rosenquist and Leigh Davenport earned awards including Bible prizes, Lions Club scholarships, and other named honors from local organizations. King-size Stamford garage sale opens with twenty dealers

A multi‑day city event in Stamford kicks off today featuring about 20 participating merchants and a Day Care Center sale in the Astin building. Stores will close around 4 pm Wednesday and reopen at 7 am Thursday as shoppers seek exceptional values amid a citywide flea and garage sale on the square.
