Johnny Childress installed as new Stamford Jaycees president at a Thursday night banquet. Howard Ho Well charged the installation. Lewis Timberlake outlined year’s work. The club sponsored the Albany Fandangle Sampler, youth center committee, Teen Baseball, safety campaigns, and a major welcome sign project that raised 1149. They qualified for state awards and began park improvements at Harmon with plans for a hospital area parking space.

Shelters Planned for Lake Stamford State Park
Tex as State Parks Board invites bids for four shelters at Lake Stamford State Park to be built on concrete bases with 12 by 18 foot footprints and a Corvette style roof. Each shelter will feature a concrete top table and two attached benches, plus a barbecue grill at one end. Funds earmarked include 2400 for park improvements south shore and 2400 more available September first. Stamford and Haskell citizens push for paved park road linking Paint Creek road to the park entrance.

New Coach Added To Stamford Bulldog Staff
Keith Munnerlyn of Range joins Stamford schools as junior high coach and teacher for the coming year. He previously coached and taught at Dalhart, is a Ranger native, and an alumnus of Ranger High School and Hardin Simmons University. Munnerlyn is married with two children and is the fourth member of the Stamford coaching staff under head coach Larry Wartes, with O. M. Isbell and Bill Anderson also on the team.

Annual Poppy sale by the Veterans of Foreign Wars will be held Saturday May 24 in downtown Stamford. Jack Chenault chairs the VFW and Mrs Ace Cox the VFW Auxiliary. A J Medcalf Dies After Oil Field Accident
A J Medcalf 43 of Coleman died Thursday at Stamford Sanitarium from internal injuries after an oil field accident on the Hendricks ranch. He was pinned by a drill stem at Well D-3 while a tool was lowered. Medcalf, a Bridwell Drilling Co floor man, also farmed near Coleman. His wife and JL P DeBusk of Coleman arrived after the accident. He was born March 17 1915 and was a World War I veteran.

Stamford Man Killed and Brother Hurt in Highway Mishap
James H. Dillard of Stamford was killed instantly and his brother Carroll T. Dillard critically injured when their 1955 Chevrolet left the pavement near Seymour on US 283, overturned, and the car burned. Relatives learned of the crash at Seymour hospital. Funeral held at Foursquare Church in Stamford. Dillard survived by eight grandchildren and several children.

Memorial Day Services Cancelled but Poppy Day Planned
Memorial Day services are cancelled this year due to it being a city holiday with low attendance. Poppy Day will be observed on May 24 with grave decorations planned for May 25 at several area cemeteries in Stamford and surrounding towns. The Military Affairs Committee led by George Kinney and others are coordinating, and families are asked to register unlisted graves for decoration.

About $700 was raised by Wednesday afternoon in the local Red Cross fund drive. Mrs. Frank Gamblin, executive secretary, said the drive is off to a good start. Obituary: M B Cobb Dies From Accidental Gunshot Wound
M B Cobb 41 a pioneer area resident died Tuesday at his Haskell home from an accidental gunshot wound. Funeral held Wednesday at Rockdale Church with burial in Willow Cemetery. Cobb a Navy veteran 1941 to 1945 and three term Haskell County Commissioner 1947 to 1992. He married Patsy Ruth Pate in 1949.
