FFA Boys Honor Dads at Banquet and Awards

Stamford FFA boys honored their dads mothers chapter sweethearts and business leaders at a school cafeteria banquet. More than 230 plates served with entertainment as interim numbers. Fenton Smith led opening. John Bill Oman outlined work and average projects per boy.

Weather Forces Cancellation of May Fete

May Fete Planet Land will not be presented after sandstorm damage and unsettled weather near the end of the school term. Coordinator Mrs Dexter Plumlee and Reynolds PTA president Mrs Jeff Hooper said refunds will seek ticket money back. Cub Scout and Blue Bird groups won prizes for ticket sales despite the cancellation.

Weather Across Stamford Hit by Heavy Rains and Winds

Heavy rains Tuesday reached 1.02 inches in Stamford with heavier totals nearby while east of the city fields flooded and ground stayed saturated. A Thursday night sandstorm and high winds caused outages and damage at Paint Creek, with a power interruption lasting 14 minutes. A funnel cloud sighting two miles south of Stamford occurred but caused no reported damage.

Hollis Payne Killed in Automobile Collision in Texas

Hollis Lee Payne age 45, Stamford cotton buyer since 1945, died Friday about 2 45 p.m. on a Texas highway between Bellville and Sealy after his car was struck by a lumber filled trailer from a lumber truck driven by Willie Green. Green faces negligent homicide charges and is free on bond. The funeral was at St John’s Methodist Church in Bellville with burial at Highlane Memorial Cemetery. Payne, active in city youth programs, was born May 11 1912 in Comanche and married Lvona Hecht in 1939 at Aspermont. He was a Methodist. He moved to the area from Lubbock with survivors including his wife a son Jimmy Payne a Stamford High student and a daughter Carol Ann two sisters and a brother. Pallbearers listed.

Man in Oil Field Accident Hospitalized Near Stamford

A 43 year old man from Coleman, Medcalf, suffered a crushing chest injury and possible injuries after a test tool fell and pinned him during well work east of Stamford. He was taken by ambulance to Stamford Sanitarium in shock with facial cuts, chest injuries, and possible bladder damage. His wife and brother in law traveled to Stamford after word of the incident.

Jaycees Install Officers Honor Individuals Tonight

Jaycees to install new officers at the annual installation and wards banquet at Nat’s Cate. Howard Howell will present honors and install officers. Johnny Childress becomes president with Kenneth Lafferty as vice president and John Hodges as second vice president. Elmer Sprecher named secretary treasurer. Directors are Bobby Rasterthing Tom Watley and Bill Gregory. Lewis Timberlake retires as president and will receive a service award.

Lions Club Sale of Brooms and Mops Planned Saturday

The Stamford Lions club holder of annual broom mop and mat sale will take place Saturday May 24. Proceeds go to support the Little League baseball program with cooperation from the Stamford Future Farmers of America. Brooms and mops are made by the Texas Blind Shops and purchases aid both the baseball program and blind workers.

Summer Baseball Program Draws 250 Youths at Wendeborn Field

More than 250 boys and men signed up for a Stamford summer baseball program at Wendeborn Field. Ages range from 7 to 16 with five teams in 7–12, four in 13–14, and four in 15–16. Lions Club sponsors the youngest group with uniforms and caps.

PTA Council to Install New Officers in May Meeting

The PTA Council will install officers on Tuesday night May 20 at 7 30 in the Oliver School cafeteria. New officers of Oliver Reynolds and Junior and Senior High school Parent Teacher units will be installed. An introductory tea honoring all Stamford teachers will follow with each teacher introduced and an oak leaf hung on a tree symbol of the National Congress of Parents and Teachers.

Stamford Pool Set to Open May 24 at Free Admission

The Stamford municipal pool announces opening day Saturday May 24 with free admission. A full cleanup of the pool area equipment filter system and surrounding park is complete and improvements include new paint on benches and shower house woodwork and a fiberglass diving board.

City Police Seize Gravel Truck Load of Beer

Stamford officers impounded a gravel truck near the west city limits after a tip led to arrest by Officer George Newell. The 150 cases were hidden under tarpaulin and plywood. Driver Bennett Elton Everett was jailed in Anson then hospitalised after falling ill.

Educator urges more aid for students to attend college

Walter Adams of Abilene Christian College told the Stormford Rotary that many capable youths cannot attend college due to finances and other barriers. He cited causes of college failure and urged families, teachers, and officials to collaborate to keep students in higher education.
