M D Harwell of Tuxedo Buried Sunday Evening

M D Harwell of Tuxedo aged 60 died Saturday at 1 10 p m at the family home near Tuxedo after years of ill health. Funeral held Sunday at 5 p m in the Tuxedo Methodist church with Rev J M Cochran of Anson directing burial in Highland cemetery. Survivors include wife three daughters two sons and several relatives with Kinney Funeral Home in charge.

Farmers Urged to Bring Tin Cans to Local Centers

County salvage leaders Henry Fry and James M. Binion designate Anson Acmilln and Stamford as tin can collection centers for Jones County. Robson Green, R. H. Campbell and Cleburne Huston named as tin collection chairs for surrounding towns. Farmers should bring cleaned cans one gallon or smaller to the nearest depot, with ends removed and cans flattened. The Stamford depot sits on the vacant lot across from the City Auditorium.

Mildred Rusk former J C Penney cashier of over two years left Monday for Fort Worth. She is now employed at Consolidated Aircraft. Daughter of Mrs Eva Rusk and Miss Blanche Baldwin, formerly with Dr Almus Blackwell, is listed as a cashier at J C Penney Com alongside Mrs Alton Meclean who also worked for Dr Black.

Judge Gilbert Smith to Attend National War Conference

Judge Gilbert Smith of Anson has been chosen by the State Association of Judges and Commissioners to represent county judges at the National War Conference in Omaha Nebraska May 23 to 26. He will carry Governor Stevenson’s personal letter and return through Fort Worth by Braniff Airways. Commissioner Joel V. Grimes will preside in his absence.

Betty Ann Putnam Recital At Central Christian Church

Betty Ann Putnam piano pupil of Mrs. C M Lester was presented in a Sunday afternoon recital at Central Christian Church. Roy Adams, a construction worker, returns home from Canada for a family visit. He plans to return in June after experiencing the cold, and says Canada is a place he likes.

Canning School Set for May Week and Home Demonstrations

Plans for Save and Share nights on May 26 27 and 28 in the home economics cottage are sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce. Women are urged to call the chamber office to join. Local Leaders to Handle Farm Labor Shortage Plan

Jones County seeks to meet farm labor shortages tied to the 1943 food program. County agent James M. Binion returns from a May 1914 San Angelo conference and says plans for registering and placing labor will be run by the local Victory Council and the county’s home demonstration unit. Local subcommittees will likely convene May 19 to discuss the new program.

Week of Fun at First Baptist Church Evening

A Week of Fun night was held at the First Baptist Church on May 11 organized by the adult department of the Sunday school with Mrs. Ella Armstrong as superintendent. The event featured a Winery gallery style night, radio programs, stunts, a theater segment, a fashion show, and a refreshment table. Baby pictures formed an art gallery and the program included a radio quiz and three reels of motion pictures.

Mrs T M O'Steen of Vernon died Wednesday night in Vernon. She was mother of Mrs R C Shelton and Earl O'Steen of this city. Funeral services will be held Friday morning in Ballinger. She is survived by her husband and several O'Steen family members including Corpus and Lane O'Steen of Vernon.

Methodist Camp for Intermediates Set in June

Knitters Sought To Meet Red Cross Program Quotas

Jones County seeks volunteers to knit 48 sleeveless sweaters 16 gloves 108 mufflers 16 smets and 8 wristlets from a 125 pound yarn quota. Widow of Lagerton Man Christens Ship at Unmont

Alma Stewart Isbel widow of J. L. Isbel of Cameron, who died when a German submarine sank his ship in Gulf waters, christened a ship at Unmont on April 18. She is the former Alma Stewart of Milano and sister of army flyer James Stewart, with family ties to Iron people.

Death Claims Child of Raymond Parnell

The two year old son of Mr and Mrs Raymond Parnell died April 28 in Denver Colorado after an illness of measles. Born March 27 1941 he is survived by his parents a sister Silviaine and brothers Benny Ray Winford Eugene and Jackie Jo. Grandparents are Mr Hburn and senile en son. Burial occurred in Denver as siblings were ill and could not travel.

Stamford High School Students Complete Red Cross Nutrition Course

Twenty one Stamford High School boys finished the Red Cross nutrition course in the home making program taught by Mrs H K Langford. Certificates arrived from Red Cross headquarters recognizing their work. Two Plays Staged By Juniors Enjoyed By Large Audience

A large Stamford High auditorium crowd enjoyed two junior class one act plays last night. Miss Maxine Rowland directed the performances and led the high school band before the shows. The opening play For the Love of Aloysius featured Barbara Sims as Cricket with a rustic picnic scenario and a cast including Norma ton, Bob Ricks, Billie Gay, Herbie Carter, Betty Mahood, Richard Yates, and John Culp. A second play presented by students followed a romantic plot with Gwendolyn and others in a picnic setup aided by director Rowland.

Roy Weaks Pitches Softball in Houston Scene

Roy Weaks, son of Mr and Mrs L E Weeks of Haskell, resumes pitching in Houston for builders in the Major City Softball League. He previously played for Gulf Oil Corp in 1941 42 and contributed to Abilene and Detroit tournaments.
