Day Drive Planned for Camp Sweeney Funds

Stamford plans a Day Drive for Camp Sweeney funds next Tuesday. The campaign highlights include Camp Sweeney’s new barracks built by 70 workers from Fort Worth and the addition of two dormitories making six total, expanding enrollment to 120 diabetic youths every four weeks. Funeral Rites Held for R. W. Blankenship in Stamford

Robert Wesley Blankenship, 70, retired farmer, died Tuesday at his home in Stamford after illness. Funeral service Wednesday at 3 p.m. at West Side Baptist Church, with Rev. Bob Green officiating. West Texas Rain Boosts Stamford Water Levels and Damages

Heavy rain across Stamford and surrounding areas totals over four inches in places, raising Lake Stamford by about three feet and adding billions of gallons. The downpour dented a Kimbell Milling elevator, damaged TV antennas, knocked out phone lines, and briefly knocked KDWT off air before restoration. Normal rainfall through May remains just over 1 inch shy of average.

City Council Recommends 1938 Nuisance Ordinance At Barn Debate

City council discussed the 1938 nuisance ordinance while addressing the livestock auction sales barn controversy. They authorized publishing the ordinance in The American and said enforcement requires a filed complaint. Other actions included a new water line to the cemetery, truck and handcuff purchases, and sharing Texas Highway Patrol costs during the Cowboy Reunion. A special meeting revealed county refusal to cover water line lowering outside city limits, with annexation or cost-sharing options offered to affected residents.

Work began this week to extend sewer services in the northwest part of town. Rain halted progress by Panhandle Construction Co. but preliminary details are being worked out. Pumping equipment installed by Wilks Dake and Steed at the north town lift station. lines to be tested Thursday.

Bride Elect Dorothy Howry to be Honored May 14

Dorothy Howry, bride elect of Dr. James R. McNiel, will be feted with a gift event on Friday May 14 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the home of Mr. and Mrs. A. Humphrey. Rotarians urged to press on at district assembly

Rotary leaders gathered for the N6th district assembly in Stamford as Benny H Hughes urged members not to rest on past laurels. The event opened Monday at St John’s Methodist Church and continued Tuesday at the Texas Cowboy Reunion grounds with 133 served at a chuck wagon meal. Incoming district governor Tayman, from Stamford, was among speakers.

City Manager Harry Steenson reports final Lake Stamford water project cost at 1,728,014.01 with one land parcel remaining. Financing included a 1.5 million revenue bond and part of a December tax bond, plus about 177 thousand from water operating funds. Largest cost was land and lake construction at 870,486.99. pipeline at 468,114.99. filter plant 224,171.69. lake pump station 80,104.94. connection to city system 56,648.00. other costs 28,487.40.
