Stamford Delegates Back LBJ With Unit Rule

Delegates from Stamford precincts 10 and 25 approve the unit rule for Lyndon Johnson at Saturday precinct meetings. Jack Watson and David Ratliff are named permanent chairmen of precincts 10 and 25 respectively with secretaries C. L. Cromwell and Lucille Martin. Delegates from both precincts include listed members such as John Ed Youngquist Clinton Rogers Dave Walker J. L. Massey E. L. Martin Roy Craig Roy Moritz Bob Prichard Ira Treadwell John Newell Oliver Brinell Sam Crawford Vernon Lovvorn and others.

Trinity Baptist Plans New Auditorium Expansion

Rev Clyde Cook announces Trinity Baptist Church will build a brick auditorium of 56-90 feet with seating for about 600. Bonds will be issued and work could start within two months. Additional Sunday School space is discussed for the west end of the Trinity Vanderbilt corner church.

Charges Filed Against Pair in Grocery Stickup

Robbery with firearms charges were filed against Freddie Earl Harrison and Roland Earl Tessier in connection with a late week hold up at Hilltop Grocery on Stamford’s north outskirts. The suspects, both of Burkburbur, were captured shortly after the hijacking and identified by the store operators Mr and Mrs N D Lewis. About $710 was reported taken.

Reves Re-Elected Sheriff and Runoffs Narrow County Races

Reves won re-election as sheriff with strong margins across the county while A J French and Larry Holmes face a runoff for tax assessor and collector. Holmes led three opponents with 1386 votes, French 1348, and other precincts showed Longley strong in Stamford, with close results in East Hamlin. Omar Burleson retained his U S Representative seat, Thurman edged Wheatley in countywide races, and Jack Cox and Ben Ramsey won governor and lieutenant governor contests in their counties.

Lions Sponsor Sale Aids Needy Children in Stamford

Stamford Lions Club hosts a two day sale at the Texas Band Shop caravan selling brooms mops ironing boards pads mats and related household items to fund crippled children's camp glasses for underprivileged children. Ground Breaking for Housing Project Begins Monday

Ground breaking ceremonies will launch a housing project in Stamford led by W J Buie of the City Housing Authority. The Moran Street site will have three buildings and six one bedroom units plus the authority office and shop building. Cicero Smith Lumber Co of Lubbock won the bid for both projects. Local labor is to be used where possible with local subcontracts.

Bigtime Operators Rob Service Station in Weekend Break-In

Thieves struck the Phy Service Station at 301 Fast McHarg over the weekend, stealing peanut money and cash from a peanut vending machine and the cold drink machine. Loss is about 10 dollars. Access was gained by breaking a door hasp, police report says.

Population Report For Jones County Due Release Today

The 1960 decennial report on Jones County will be released today at noon from the Abilene district supervisor’s office. Final tabulations were completed late Wednesday, and the county is expected to show a slight decline with Stamford likely recording a population increase.

Left Wrist Broken In Mishap At Stamford Lake

An outing at Stamford Lake ended badly for a visitor Tuesday with a fall that left Mrs Billie McCauley injured. She sustained a broken wrist but was later dismissed from hospital and allowed to go home on Wednesday.
