Stamford girls attend state home economics rally in Galveston

Four Stamford High School representatives and Mrs H K Langford left for Galveston to attend the state home economics rally. Lillian Lamb led as Future Home Makers Club delegate with several classmates earning top places in recent competitions. Judges included Miss Gladys Martin and Miss Eliora Marr, and a style show highlighted garments made by the girls.

Stamford wholesale houses organize a softball team for the season and challenge others to field teams. Marvin Doss leads as manager with Ernest Coonrod as field manager. Needles Dealers of S Stamford District To Attend Meeting

Five dealers from the Stamford district will attend the annual ad sign and sales promotion meet of the B. E. Needles Company in Lubbock. The program begins at 10:00 AM at the Hotel Lubbock with lunch at 12:30 and a 5:00 PM close. Factory reps will discuss important 1939 aims and materials. The Stamford group includes Wear Medlin Floyd Cook Terry Avoca and W. O. Smith.

Rotary Club hosts employees at luncheon in vocational service effort

About 70 Rotarians and guests attended a Tuesday luncheon where each Rotarian introduced an employee guest. A Kinney chaired the vocational service event with D L Ashley and A C Thomas addressing employer expectations. E E Smith led the Rural Letter Carriers annual district banquet.

National Guard Inspected in U.S. Federal Review

National Guard Company K of the 142nd Infantry undergoes annual federal inspections led by Lt Col M H Quesenberry and Major E V Hardwick. Inspections cover armory, records, and personnel with drills, marksmanship, first aid, and map reading. Public dress rehearsal slated at 8 p m at the city auditorium. Captain Frank M. Locke noted for last year’s rifle proficiency.

Florede Whitworth Named Avoca High Valedictorian

Florede Whitworth will be valedictorian and Ima Lee Rial salutatorian of Avoca High School as the senior class prepares for graduation on May 26 at the auditorium. O W Winne, superintendent, announced the honors with grades just ahead of W M Hammitt and Wilburn Salmon. Baccalaureate services are set for Sunday May 21 at a local church.

Miss Brooks' Father Dies in Lamesa Home

J. W. Brooks died unexpectedly of a heart attack at the family residence in Lamesa about 8 oclock Thursday morning. Mrs. Brooks and Miss Ruby Le Brooks were visiting and left to join a proposed trip to South Texas after learning of the death.

Mystery at Midnight at Stamford High School auditorium

Home Talent presents a three act mystery Friday and Thursday night at the high school auditorium directed by Miss Rita O Bryant and sponsored by the American Legion for the building fund. Detective Briggs wrestles with clues as Ralph Norris and Bennie Baker drive the solution with Ramah Eager as Sarah the East Indian medium adding atmosphere. The Stamford High Band will play between acts and a local committee handles tickets and arrangements.

Vida Elliott to Return to India This Fall

Vida Elliott sister of Dr. Beulah Gould will depart for India this fall. She taught at Stamford Public School as its first M A holder, studied at Hartford Seminary and USC, and served as a missionary teacher in India before returning to the United States. Since 1931 she has been a field worker for United Christian Missionary Society and, until her departure, State Missionary Secretary of young people in Texas for the Disciples of Christ. Her return was announced at the State Convention in Wichita Falls last week.

Worth Man Released From Sanitarium After Wreck

Sam W. Polk of Fort Worth, injured in an automobile wreck near Stamford, had a fractured neck vertebra, a broken ankle, and severe lacerations. He already wore a leg cast when the accident happened and has been dismissed from Stamford Sanitarium.

Stamford High School plans graduation at St. John’s Methodist Church on May 26 with 130 candidates including 42 girls and 89 boys. The baccalaureate service is scheduled for May 21 at First Baptist Church. program details remain to be finalized.

Goulds Return from Chiropractors Convention in San Antonio

Drs Gould report a fine homecoming from the alumni convention of the San Antonio chiropractic college. Lectures by prominent professionals included Dr Piner from Greenville and Dr Crow, Arkansas State Board of Roamers, with Dr Dewin of Texas Chiropractic College leading a clinic.
