Uncle Charlie Meeker Dies After Long Life of Service
Charles Leon Meeker 80 a Stamford pioneer figure died Sunday night at his South Anson Street home after a lengthy illness He served as justice of the peace and city fire marshal for over a decade and helped organize the Stamford fire department He was born in Jackson Mississippi July 27 1858 attended Columbia University and later aided Geronimo as an Indian scout in 1886 He married Edna Freeman in 1889 and moved to Abilene before settling in Stamford Survived by his wife two children four grandchildren and other relatives.

Charles Brownfield, son of Mr. and Mrs. CFE Brownfield, Stamford High senior, won the Abilene regional boys singles title without dropping a set. He defeated Dennis Humphreys 6-2 6-1 and Paul Rogers 6-2 6-1 to earn a place in the Texas state meet in Austin on May 5 and 6. Brownfield has multiple county doubles titles with partners Harrison and G C Carothers and has played tennis since fifth grade.

Packard Ambulance Added to Kinney Funeral Home Fleet
Kinney Funeral Home added a new Packard ambulance this week, giving three ambulances and hearses. The vehicles feature electric fans heaters stretchers pneumatic tires and plush seats for comfort. Safety equipment includes hydraulic brakes shatterproof glass all steel body amber and red lights and inner tubes. The bodies are designed to load patients from front or rear with no partition. Only three other such units exist in the state.
