Stamford to field a baseball club drawn from the Fire Department with Bascom Connally as organizer. The team will debut Thursday against Anson at Stamford High School grounds at 4 p m with players including Husbands Connally Bettis Helmer Duncan Dicken son Dickenson Hicks Woodruff Rowland Bowdry Corley and Owens. Bill Smith, sentenced to death for the 1927 murder of J. C. Owens deputy sheriff near Old Roby, will be brought to Anson on May 14 for a sanity trial. Warden E. F. Harrell at Huntsville reports affidavits claiming Smith has become insane since sentencing. The district court hearing will decide his mental state as multiple stays of execution have been granted since his death sentence.

Stamford residents cheered at a Stamford Revue staged by the P T A under Mrs Harry Fuller at the City Auditorium Friday night The show featured sixty five performers including four out of town entertainers Led by Helen Bradford of Rule and Mike Reaves of Anson the cast offered twelve acts ranging from a London era one act to comic vaudeville The program paid tribute to local merchants and closed with dramatic readings by Sarah Upshaw as Ann Shirley Green

Legion Moves to Improve Road to Reynolds Oil Field
The American Legion, at a Monday night meeting, passed a resolution urging efforts to upgrade the road east of Stamford to the Reynolds oil field. Members cited needed repairs to several bridges, a replacement for the California Creek crossing, gentler grades, wider right of way, and removal of rocks, with the Rotary Club pledging support at a noon meeting.

Mrs. M. E. West Dies in Stamford at 77
Mrs. M. E. West wife of J. S. West of Pleasant Valley died in Stamford last Saturday April 27 after a long illness at age 77. Born August 80 1851 in Tennessee she was highly regarded by neighbors with many visitors during illness. Funeral was Sunday at Pleasant Valley church with large attendance. Rev. Mr. Pope of Anson officiated and Stamford Undertaking Co. directed. Interment in Pleasant Valley cemetery. Survived by her husband ten children. three children preceded her in death.

American Renews Lease on Building in Cleburne
Cleburne Huston owner of The Stamford American signed a contract with Walter and C. D. McDaniel yesterday leasing the south side square building for three more years. The present lease would have expired September 1 and the new lease runs to May 1, 1982. Mr. and Mrs. Matt Osborne of Vernon were guests of Mrs. R. F. Mahood Sunday.

One hundred twenty five Dallas business and professional men visited Stamford for the 29th Annual Good Will Tour arriving by special train. The group was welcomed by Mayor Warren B. Tayman, crowned Evelyn Warwick Queen of the City, and enjoyed a chuck wagon feed and entertainment at the Stamford Country Club. Local honors included conferring the Ancient Order of Gayes on residents, with thanks to Swenson Land Cattle Company and Dick Rowland among others for hosting and support. Mr. and Mrs. J J McKinney of Abilene were weekend guests at the Colbert home.
