Farm and Ranch Day Draws Stamford Residents

Stamford on Wednesday April 3 hosts Farm and Ranch Day sponsored by the Stamford Chamber of Commerce Retail Trade committee chaired by Herman Cox with Cecil Eager leading the event. Islanders around the square will display farm and ranch gear while Gayle Baize and his band perform on the post office plaza. Merchants also feature Easter merchandise and special bargains.

Easter Seals Drive Aids Abilene Crippled Children Center

West Texas Rehabilitation Center in Abilene sponsors Easter seal drives to benefit crippled children across 11 counties. About 122 patients are treated weekly. 45 percent have cerebral palsy, 35 percent polio, 20 percent orthopedic or speech injuries. Seals mailed March 25 to April 1. 37 000 seals for local and surrounding areas.

Rotarians Urged To Buy Easter Seals

Shelley Smith of the West Texas Rehabilitation Center Abilene urged Rotarians to support the current Easter Seals sale. Seventy seven percent of proceeds stay in Abilene for the center. Dr Ike Hudson of Stamford introduced Smith as local drive chairman. The Abilene center serves an 11 county area with half the patient load from outside Taylor County. There are 11 children from Stamford and vicinity.

Stamford REA reports ahead of schedule on debt repayment

At its 17th annual meeting the Stamford Electric Cooperative revealed paying off eight notes totaling 832 dollars and regular debt service on notes totaling about 102,509 with interest near 229,000. Dr Hugo B Haterius and board members were reappointed as 250 attendees heard the president secretary treasurer and manager reports. Organized in 1939 the cooperative authorized 2 230 000 in Rural Electrification Administration notes over 35 years.

Open House At Reynolds Street School Draws Large Crowd

A large audience of parents and friends visited Reynolds Street School during the Thursday night open house. Principal H. J. Merriott and teachers welcomed guests while the PTA and hospitality committee provided refreshments and guided tours. Displays included library and art rooms with six foot totem poles and paper mache figures, murals, and flower arrangements. The event marked National Public School Week. Mr and Mrs Herschel Kelley later reported F C Kelley recovering at home after a Wichita Falls hospital visit.

Davenport Named to State ASC Committee

B P Davenport of Stamford has been appointed as a member of the Texas State Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Committee by the Agriculture Department Secretary Benson. He replaces C O Moser of DeKalb and is a farmer who manages the Davenport estate. Davenport has served on the school board and as a Chamber of Commerce director. his wife died last May and he has two children Pat Davenport of Uvalde and Gail a Stamford High student. He is the son of Mrs B P Davenport and the late Judge Davenport who came to Stamford in 1909 from Rangely.

Charles Marshall Succumbs From Heart Attack

Charles Weasley Marshall 65 died from a heart attack Monday at the Stamford Sanitarium after collapsing at the public welfare office in the city auditorium. Funeral was held at Bethel Baptist Church with burial in the local cemetery. He was born November 29, 1901, and earlier lived as a farmer in Smith County before moving to Stamford in 1955. He married Sue Reid in 1952 and is survived by two sons, four daughters, four brothers, three sisters, and 15 grandchildren.

Plans For Annual Easter Pageant In Stamford

Community Easter pageant to be held in Caramon Park with a 11 pm start Saturday night and Easter dawn finale. The event features a pantomimed story beneath the hill cross, sung hymns, and a volunteer cast from local churches directed by WE Mayes with Mrs J V Frivell Jr as general chairman.

Seventeen Awards Earned by Pierian Club at TWEC District Meet

Pierian Club of Stamford tallied seventeen awards at the First District Texas Federation of Women's Clubs convention in Mineral Wells. Five firsts, six seconds, three thirds, two honorable mentions, and a subscription award to Texas Club Woman highlighted a strong showing across press book youth interest health and welfare investments economic security and other divisions. Open House at Oliver Street School for Public School Week

Judy Moritz reports Oliver Street Elementary hosted a Texas Public School Week open house on March 7 with about 150 adults attending. Activities included a vocational agriculture talk by Brad Rowland, a second grade program on Texas, a PTA meeting at 7 30 pm, and a drawing where Mrs Coleman won a $5 PTA prize for most parents present.

Stamford High Coach Attends Oklahoma Coaching Clinic

Gordon Wood of Stamford High will attend the annual coaching clinic at the University of Oklahoma on Friday and Saturday. The event is run by the Oklahoma coaching staff and Bear Bryant of Texas A and M College. Coaches from Hamlin Haskell Beyrmour and nearby towns join a seven to eight state gathering. Wood travels with two Winters and two Wink coaches.

Stamford Men to Attend Texas Ginners Meeting in Dallas

A. J. Millis of Rule Jayton Cotton Oil Co and Roland Kelley of Stamford Cotton Oil Mill will travel to Dallas for the Texas Ginners Association meeting. They will depart Sunday and likely return Tuesday. Kelley serves as a director of the state group.
