Stamford Voters to Pick Police Chief on Next Tuesday

Stamford residents will vote next Tuesday to choose a new police chief. The election is the sole contested race on two ballots the city and the hospital district. Two veteran Stamford policemen Louis E Johnson and Duyane Medford contest the post.

Lueders Avoca district meeting on public school funding

Patrons and taxpayers in Lueders Avoca Independent School District meet Tuesday night at 7 30 p m in the cafetorium to discuss pending public school financing legislation. An elections update notes local candidates for police chief and city and hospital board seats.

Cancer Crusade Set for April 8 by Local Forum

The annual Cancer Crusade is scheduled for April 8. County chairman is Mrs. La Fay Patterson of Hamlin with help from Mrs. B. B. Gay locally. Stamford memorial chairman is Mrs. James H. West. A coffee Thursday will finalize plans by the Woman's Forum representatives.

Bloodmobile visit exceeds Stamford quota with strong turnout

Stamford High students and numerous out of town donors boosted the bloodmobile’s March 19 visit past its 90 unit goal. Of 100 registered, 92 donated and 8 were deferred. Local clubs competed for highest donor rate as Lions, Jaycees and Young Farmers posted solid participation.

Stamford Man Sentenced to Forty Years for Murder

A 30 year old Stamford man, Eines Luna Castenada, was sentenced to 40 years in prison after being convicted of murdering Lucas Martinez, 52, in Stamford on October 29, 1974. The jury, after an hour of deliberation, recommended a 5 to 99 year range, with sentencing set for April 10. Castenada claimed self defense and said the gun discharged as Martinez approached with a knife.

Churches set special Easter services across Stamford weekend

Stamford churches present a weekend of Easter events. Central Presbyterian hosts a Passion reading and Maundy Thursday tables. First Baptist headlines with youth choir music and a sermon on Three Days That Changed the World. Other churches offer varied services, sermons, cantatas, and Easter egg hunts.

Jerry Terrell To Head Jones County Fair

Jerry Terrell public relations director with Stamford Electric Cooperative in Stamford was named president of the Jones County Fair by the board at the 66 Sirloin Cafe in Anson. He replaces Jack Anglin of Anson who served as president for two years. The 1975 Fair dates were set for August 14 to 16, with heads of departments and board vacancies to be filled at the April meeting.

Church of Christ to Host Gospel Meeting Next Week

Oliver Street Church of Christ at 302 E Oliver will hold a gospel meeting from Sunday March 30 to Wednesday April 2. Doyle Wells of Borger will speak and Otho Higgs of Hamlin will direct songs. Sunday services are 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. all other nights at 7:30 p.m.
