Texas extensions report 788 home demonstration club women in 83 counties participating in the 1971 improved living room contest, up from 695 last year, as hard times boost interest in affordable home improvements and social comfort.
An editorial urges adopting a home demonstration agent in Jones county to reduce Red Cross dependency. The piece cites February Red Cross demands in Jones county and contrasts Nolan county’s 800 home demonstration members not applying for aid. It argues a funded extension program would lessen famine risk and be a sound county investment.
Berryhill women form a home demonstration club with 116 cooperators planning food budgets and planting schedules for 11 communities. A program includes chorus numbers and solos by local performers, a cornet solo, a negro sermon, a violin piece, and old familiar songs. Admission is free with a voluntary offering.
The Rev. William G. Fletcher will speak at Saint Luke's Episcopal church on Wednesday afternoon March 25 at 4 o'clock. The public is invited to attend.
Preparations and rehearsals are under way for The Variety Revue of 1931 staged in City Auditorium Friday evening March 27 at 7 15 o clock. The Stamford Fire Department directs the revue with Hennie Harrow and Corrad Brady and proceeds aid in carrying on its work. The show features vaudeville acts music dances and spring fashions by Bryant Link Co L Schwarz Co Strauss Dry Goods Co Baker Hanna Bros J C Penney Co and Hassen Dry Goods Co. About forty talent ed performers from Stamford will appear and the directors promise a show unlike any before in Stamford.
Contract for concrete paving on Highway No 50 from Stamford to Haskell is set to be let by the State Highway Commission during March 31 and April 1. The 14.3 mile route aims to improve accessibility ending at Sagerton with eroding and drainage work on adjacent segments also scheduled, forming a substantial dirt road upgrade in surrounding areas.
Daily services from 7:40 to 8:00 p.m. during Easter week except Saturday. Rev. W. G. Pletcher, recently in Jerusalem, leads a study of Jewish teachings amid the Passion narrative. Fletcher with lay volunteers serving meals under Mrs. J Jones as the Board of Stewards enlists participants. The effort runs nightly except Wednesdays and Saturdays until the town is covered.
Readers of The American favor the novel Cimarron over General Pershing for serialized feature. The vote, two to one, selects Cimarron to begin running in The American early in April, replacing Pershing’s World War Anecdotes.
A Vernon Vernon Hart post bean feed Monday night launched a drive to raise 287 dollars for an installment on the Legion home note. Most subscriptions were paid in cash and many out of town members attended. W G Pletcher spoke on a wartime weapon, the hukery, used by Curka sailors. Rev Har ris and Dr Dallas Scuvthard urged support. Raymond Astin praised the response as Anson Legionnaires shared a meal but few attended.
Ray Rector of Stamford served a successful year as grand master of Texas Odd Fellows. New officers were installed in Fort Worth as sixteen Stamford members attended the grand lodge meeting. The Stamford delegation, led by Rector and Mrs Ray Rector, returned home Wednesday afternoon.
M. bk. Scott, 69, died at his home in Lueders Wednesday morning. Funeral Thursday at 2:40 p.m. at Lueders Baptist Church with Rev. Roy Shahan of Abilene officiating. Interment in Clear Fork Cemetery. Surviving: wife three daughters a son and a sister.
Whiteaker adjutant of the Texas Department of the American Legion and Mrs Carpenter department Auxiliary president will visit the Verna Hart Post at the regular meeting next Monday night in Austin. Rev Harris reported by long distance call that members from Anson Hamlin and Rule posts may be invited to attend and a joint Legion Auxiliary meeting is proposed.
In Stamford the Red Cross discontinues some aid as government loans expand to ease life costs. March allotments shrink while free garden seeds are provided to farming families still receiving aid, with 17 seed varieties distributed through the local Red Cross chapter to those in need.
Hawley and Antelope schools dominated the Jones county rural and small-town tennis meet in Anson on Saturday. Antelope won the doubles and singles titles, while Hawley swept several classes and earned four points toward the county championship. Hamlin and Hawley will clash at Anson to decide district qualification as literary and track events are set for Anson this weekend.
Aut Dial, a veteran candidate in Sante city politics, declares his bid for chief of police. He cites experience and calls both opponents men of integrity while praising Bramford tax service and urging the office stay within trusted hands.
Executives of the Chisholm Trail Area for Boy Scouts met Monday night at the Hilton Hotel in Abilene called by President James P. Stenson. They discussed holding a summer camp for area Boy Scouts with Dr. J. H. Rutherford, T. A. Upshaw and Bunkley in attendance.
