Preparations Underway for Jones County Singing Convention

The Jones county singing convention plans its April 4 and 5 meeting at Stamford City Auditorium with L E Baize as president. The Firemen's band will open on Saturday night. Last year’s gathering drew about 2,500 attendees, a Stamford record, and locals from surrounding counties joined in.

County Basketball Tournament Held At Anson Last Week

Four teams from each precinct competed in Anson to determine county basketball champions in junior and senior divisions. Friday results included wins by Cross Roads, Nevida, New Hope, Hawley, Avoca, and others. Saturday finals saw Avoca, Hawley, New Hope, and Hawley triumph in respective junior and senior matches.

New Hope Captures Jones County Girls Basketball Title

New Hope edged Hawley to win the Jones County championship in Anson on March 7. Forwards Hazel and Pearl Goree led scoring while guards Frances Mickler and Nettie Bean slowed Hawley. centers Lora Sorrells and Louise Hager controlled the paint. Coach Miss Inez Agee guided the victorious squad.

Death of Pat Neff Wilkinson in Bricksdale listed

Pat Neff Wilkinson aged 10, son of Mr and Mrs B C Wilkinson, died at home in Bricksdale last Sunday morning. Funeral at Lindsey Chapel Church of Christ Sunday at 4 pm conducted by Rev M B Harris. Burial in Rockdale Cemetery with Kinney Brothers of Stamford in charge. Born October 17, 1920 he is survived by three brothers and two sisters.

First Loan Checks For Exn Service Men Arrive Here

Scholastic Census Urges Stamford Citizens to Aid

Stamford Schools seek full cooperation as the scholastic census begins March first. Each name on the census earns the district 17.50 toward public school support, covering ages 16 to 21, regardless of enrollment status or race, with J A Middleton conducting the survey and residents urged to report overlooked children by telephone.

Mrs Jane White Diest Dies at Avoca Home

Mrs Jane White Diest died at her son H D D White’s Avoca home last Friday morning March 6. Funeral 2 p.m. Saturday at the H D White residence conducted by Rev Strother Avoca and Rev W G Fletcher Stamford. Burial in Spring Creek cemetery. Pallbearers were six grandsons. She was born October 11 1847 in Tennessee and came to Texas after marriage. Porter Whaley Visits Stamford Early This Week

Porter Whaley former West Texas Chamber of Commerce manager and current San Antonio Chamber manager visited Stamford in the week's early days. He formerly lived in Stamford and still owns a residence here and is resting at Mineral Wells while traveling to see friends.

Red Cross Leaders Visit Stamford Chapter

Red Cross officials H. C. King and Sam Roberts visited Stamford chapter. Roberts said 646 families in Haskell county were aided, with efforts to cut the number in half, and similar reductions were being attempted in Jones county.

First Baptist Awards $15,000 Sunday School Building Contract

The First Baptist Church awarded the $15,000 contract for a brick Sunday School building to EF. D. Jones of Stamford. The two story 40 by 80 foot structure with a basement and connecting unit will be built on church property facing Oliver Street. Rev. Sam Morrie started the campaign last year and local contractors won the bids with labor expected to be local.

Legion Bean Feed Planned After Successful Event

The American Legion announces a repeat bean feed next Monday night at the Legion Hall. Post commander Raymond Astin invites Anson Legionnaires and all ex service men in the area to attend. Arrangements were finalized at the regular meeting, with district convention reports from Abilene also discussed.

Dorothy Baker of Stamford hosted Miss Katheryn Williams as a guest at a Jarvis Hall pajama party. The annual dormitory event for town girls followed dinner in the university cafeteria and a Texas Christian University versus MSU basketball game, ending with a dormitory parlor program and midnight rooms.

Fellowship Night at Avoca Church Evening of Fun
