The St. John's Methodist church Sunday School plant is nearly finished with Rev. E. A. Reed optimistic it will open for occupancy Sunday. Delays from painter shortages occurred midweek. The east wing on the first and second floors converts waste space into assembly and class rooms for five children’s departments.
The Stamford Music Club announces a public concert on Sunday afternoon April 3 at the First Baptist Church. Leonard Burford of Abilene Christian College will perform piano and vocal numbers with Stamford Music Club members. Mrs. Byron Lewis, club president, outlined federation membership efforts and past president Mrs. Warren B. Tayman’s role. The program featured chamber music studies, Schubert and Schumann pieces, and a piano duet with explanations by Mrs. Baird. Members listed include Miss Margaret Upshaw and numerous Mmes. Foster, Sims, McClellan, Carlton, Terry, Reese, Moore, Tavman, Baird, Callicoatte, Lewis, Lane, Randolph, Flem ing, and Gardner.
Reverend Dick O'Brien pastor of First Baptist Church attracted large audiences last week. He spoke at a Monday Abilene banquet for the adult department, then at Mineral Wells on Tuesday afternoon for a district B T X convention, and finally at Vernon on Tuesday night for an all church banquet.
Clarence Symes county supervisor reports on Farm Security Administration efforts at year end 1937. The County Farm Debt Adjustment Committee aided 20 farmers, is assisting 12 more, with total indebtedness of 90 418 dollars across 4805 acres. Creditors reduced debt by 2865 dollars and 1017 dollars in taxes were paid to the local treasury.
The second of two refresher courses in pediatrics and obstetrics for practicing physicians in the Second Medical District will be held in Sweetwater on March 7. The Bluebonnet Hotel serves as meeting headquarters with Dr. F. E. Hudson of Stamford as district councilor. Lectures in obstetrics will be given by Dr. Ben H. Passmore of San Antonio and pediatrics by Dr. Max R. Woodward of Sherman.
The Stamford High School junior class will present the three act comedy Two Weeks Vacation on Friday night March 25. Cast includes Pete Andrews Cecil Gray Jr Harry Lee Haynes Duncan Williams Vivian Lamb Mary Ashburn and Claudine Young. Mrs Ben Cole directs with F W Pauling helping sponsor. proceeds aid the junior senior banquet expenses.
The West Texas Chamber of Commerce announces its twentieth annual convention in Wichita Falls on April 25 to 27. The theme is A Square Deal for the Producer, focusing on agricultural livestock and oil interests with Mayor Fiorello H. LaGuardia expected to address the general assembly on April 26 at Memorial Auditorium.
Exchange Club members exhibited amateur motion pictures at Grand Theater last Friday. Dr L F Metz Dr Ike Hudson and Roy Arledge presented local and Western United States scenes including the Anson Stamford football game last fall and Alaska honeymoon views. Bulldogs players Pete Andrews and Winfred Rucker received trophies at the luncheon.
Stamford Business and Professional Women plan to attend Mrs Franklin D Roosevelt’s lecture at Memorial Auditorium in Wichita Falls. The First Lady will discuss A Day at the White House, drawing interest in home life of the First Family.
Jim Stell begins erection of a tourist camp on North Swenson avenue with six modern stone cabins on the Pandhandle service station lot. Lawrence Crider has the contract. Cabins will include glazed tile bathrooms hot and cold water and running ice water. Two blocks will face each other with a double garage in each block.
The Texas Coca Cola Bottling Company will use East Reynolds Street property as a larger distributing base with Stamford as a broader hub. Headquarters remain in Abilene while trucks previously moved products from that city. New staff include A C C McCowan as sales manager and S J Loreau with Jester Prichard as salesmen. all relocate families this week.
Mrs Sallie T Pate Miss Ruby Lee Brooks and Miss Mabel Can non returned last week from a two week trip to Mexico City They stopped in Monterrey but spent most time in and near Mexico City They made side trips to Tasco Puebla Cuernavaca and Tuluca and visited many points in the vicinity of Mexico City.
Ellen Smith circle of the St John’s Methodist W M met at the church Monday afternoon for Bible study led by Mrs EF A Reed. The discussion on The First Witnesses from The Way of the Witnesses emphasized that disciples become witnesses to the risen Christ and can witness beyond the Roman Empire into all the earth.

A son born Sunday night to Mr. and Mrs. H L Martin of Rule. A daughter named Josephine Ann born Saturday to Mr. and Mrs. R B Burkman of Lueders.
F. F. Upshaw reports fewer than fifty automobiles registered in Stamford under the new 1938 license plates through Wednesday, with 1,200 to 1,400 registrations usual. The plates are still uncommon on streets as March 1 marks lawful use and April 1 tightens compliance. Upshaw hopes for a quicker signup to dodge a late month rush.
Clayton Todd 38, former Pleasant Valley school principal near Stamford, died Sunday in Eastland of Brights disease after a period of illness. He taught at Lone Cedar in Eastland county before falling ill after Christmas. Survivors include his widow and son Clayton Wayne.
J J Craft 88 longtime Stonewall county resident died Tuesday at his Swenson home after a ten week illness. Born in Mississippi November 10 1849 he moved to Stonewall in 1889 joined the Baptist church 71 years and the Masonic order 60 years. Funeral at Brazos Valley Baptist Church with Masons assisting. Interment Brazos Valley cemetery. Survivors include three sons J F Craft J T Craft and J J Craft Jr all of Swenson and four daughters Mrs Annie Prichard Miss Sadie Craft Mrs Eddie Hahn Spur and Mrs Polly Hill Floydada.
Three members of the Stamford Music Club joined the Abilene Civic Music Association and will hear world famous musicians brought to Abilene next year. Mrs. Byron Lewis, incoming president of the First District Federated Music Clubs and Stamford club head, along with Mrs. Reginald Baird and Mrs. Jim McClulloch, took membership in the association.
W. 5 Roe announces George Rollins formerly at Gulf Kefving office becomes manager at the Goodbear Fire and Rubber Company. Rollins has served several months in the Gulf Kefving office.
Stamford Chamber of Commerce approves a weekly Trades Day every Wednesday starting March 9 plus a livestock auction by the Stamford Livestock Exchange. Prizes include twelve $5 cash awards tied to fowls. extensive ads run in nine area papers. Auctions led by Bill White will be held at a new 30 by 40 foot corrugated iron building in Stamford.
The Trinity University Choir directed by Alton Pierce will visit Stamford on Thursday March 10 for two programs. A noon luncheon at the Presbyterian church precedes a 1 p.m. public concert in the High School auditorium, featuring 35 voices plus directors and accompanists.
Central Presbyterian Church pastor Rev W F Rogan and laymen Dick Rowland Earl Keene Richard Davis and Bart Holland attended a fellowship gathering in Lemone at the Breckenners Presbyterian church last Friday night.

Mr and Mrs Travia Pacco were exiled to Florida Monday morning to attend the funeral of Mrs Rasco s only brother who died there Sunday.
The American plans an extra Tuesday edition ahead of the first weekly Trades Day on Wednesday. It will include local news and merchant ads with specials. To reach rural subscribers, press will run Monday afternoon and ads must arrive by Saturday noon.
EO Soderberg 74 a Sweden native who lived in the Ericksdahl area since 1908 died at his daughter’s Stamford home after a two week illness due to heart trouble. Funeral at Swedish Lutheran Church with Rev Haterius officiating. Burial in church yard cemetery. Survivors include widow two daughters two sons seven grandchildren two sisters and a brother. Kinney Funeral Home in charge.
The Jones County Teachers met at Anson High School Auditorium on Saturday for reorganizing under the federated TE TA plan. Delegates elected to the Sweetwater March 12 House of Delegates were B E M Connell EF Karl Isbill and G KR Bennett with J F P Oder as alternate. New officers serve until early 1989 including M M Collins president Mise Hibernia Grace first vice president Wil Himmes second vice president Stanley Cameron treasurer and Vid Wall secretary.
Mrs KR R Shanafelt and her children Betty and Bobb are visiting Mrs R EF Lee in Hobbs New Mexico.

Robert Thomas Jackson 174 a Jones county pioneer died at his son’s home in Lamesa at 1 a m Thursday. Funeral at Stamford Church of Christ with burial in Highland Cemetery near his wife who died in 1925. He was born September 14 186?, married June 21 1882 in Navarre County. Survivors: two sons Robert of Lames and Alten T of Stamford. two daughters Mrs. Carl Morris of Los Angeles and Mrs. Bula Rerie of Stamford. nephew J. B. Jackson of Stamford.
