An Texas based organization formed under Texas law aimed at reuniting pioneers of the open range. The first gathering was scheduled for June 26 to 28, 1930 near Stamford, Texas, attracting attendees from Texas New Mexico Arizona Oklahoma and beyond.
The Twenty-fifth Texas Cowboy Reunion honors Will Rogers, who visited in 1925. President WG Swenson recalls Rogers’s warmth and a ride with him, noting the event celebrates old-time cowboys and current livestock-industry cowboys alike.
The Texas Cowboy Reunion opens Friday and runs through July 4 featuring rodeo events calving contests cutting horse shows and square dances. The parade at 5 p.m. begins a program of traditional entertainment with oldtime cowboys ranch activities and barrel races alongside an American Quarter Horse show and Will Rogers trophy calf roping.
Camp Fire Girls at Lueders Baptist Encampment will open Sunday July 17 with Blue Birds Horizon Club and Camp O Da Ko members. Camp registration stands at 110. Mrs Gordon Wood is director and Stamford Camp organized the event.
Chain telephone calls in Stam ford on Wednesday and Thursday urged Fourth of July travelers to exercise care to reduce highway deaths. The Pierian Club, led by Mrs. H. J. Merriott, collaborated with state and national women’s clubs to reach 10 percent of licensed drivers in Jones county.
The Stamford Ministerial Alliance welcomes visitors to the 23rd annual Texas Cowboy Reunion and invites attendance at any church Sunday. The alliance urges the Cowboy Reunion directors and all responsible for suspending activities on Sunday to be commended. W. A. Appling, pastor of St. John's Methodist Church, president.
A contract for an addition to the Stamford telephone building was let June 23 with Man kins and Westbrook of Alsitene as successful bidders. The one story masonry addition will be 2200 square feet, attached to the west side, and will house new equipment for the dial system. The project includes relocation of the entrance, enlarged commercial office, new switch room, mechanical room, storage, large rest room, and full mechanical refrigeration. An asphalt lot will provide employee parking. The work is expected to finish late this year with dial service scheduled for February.
Charles H Tompkins, writing from San Antonio, recalls a fall roundup in 1891 near the Stamford area with over 20 000 cattle. He notes he cannot attend this year’s reunion due to age and mobility, and mentions outfits such as T Diamond and DIT, plus his past roles with Old Trail Drivers Association of Texas.
The fiftieth anniversary of Rev F R Zucker as an active minister was celebrated at Zion Lutheran Church with special services on June 23. Guest speaker Rev Carl T Duergen commented on Zucker's 30 years in parish ministry and 20 years as a missionary in India. The Zucker family resides at the Lutheran parsonage in Lagerton where Zucker serves as pastor. Out of town guests included Rev and Mrs QO Horn Abilene and others from nearby towns.
Sponsors to the 1955 Texas Cowboy Reunion will compete for five prizes and enjoy a packed schedule. Events include a sponsors breakfast at 9 a.m. Sunday, chuck wagon meals, a Friday ball, and dances through the weekend with Jack Free and his orchestra. Finalists receive Texan prizes. top prize a saddle with other prizes from Feidt Manufacturing and Holland Jewelry Company.
Earl Kiser has been elected president of the Stamford Exchange club succeeding Louis Blackstock who served six months. Officers installed Friday include Roy McAnear first vice president pity Foster second vice president Loyd Dennis secretary treasurer. Board of control includes Blackstock Bob Craig B L Williams and Gordon Wood with holdover Mills Kelley and Rollins. Mrs L E Harper of Arlington visits. Mr. and Mrs. C S McNeely host. The Webbs plan weekend trip to Galveston to see their new grandbaby.
An open letter apologizes to Uncle Bob Weatherby for misnaming the saddle winner in the old time call roping contest. It notes readers would recognize Bob from a pictured page and asks forgiveness for the error.
Company M of the 142nd Infantry National Guard plans a two week summer camp at Fort Hood opening July 10. Six officers and 938 enlisted men will attend. about three enlisted men will be at their first camp. An advance detachment departs July 9, with main body leaving July 10 by bus for a week on the range and the second week in the field.
