Cowboys Ride Into 37th Texas Reunion as Stock Promises Thrills

Rodeo producer Jack Ratten says the 37th Texas Cowboy Reunion will feature a strong stock lineup. He purchased the entire bucking string from Rockin R Rodeo Co and added animals from the Mescalero Reservation. The event will draw riders to the closing night performances with big purses and high excitement.

Stamford Man Drowns at City Lake During Family Outing

Stamford resident Leo Rodrigues Ses drowned Sunday afternoon at Lake Stamford about 5:30 p.m. while swimming with his brother Daniel and brother in law Alex Aguilar. Daniel and Alex attempted rescue but Leo sank and died. He was born September 24 1945 in Corpus Christi and moved to Stamford in 1961. Survived by father Leo Sr and mother Mrs Domingo Sanchez, three brothers Dan Chris Ralph, two sisters Mrs Paul Reyes and Mrs Alexander Aguilar.

Stamford Street Parade Signals Weekend Cowboy Celebration

The event opens Saturday at 4 PM with a grand street parade through Stamford featuring 500 horses and riders, decorated floats, riding clubs, and vintage wagons. Rodeo performances run Saturday Monday and Tuesday with calf roping for men 55 and older and multiple saddle prizes. The American Quarter Horse Show runs July 3 and 4 with halter judging July 3 and performance classes July 4.

Congressman Omar Burleson of Texas 17th District will speak at the 10 oclock business meeting of the Texas Cowboy Reunion Association. New Stamford Chamber manager Bart Burnett gives the welcome. M M Cobb of Lueders presides. Memorial service July 2 3 p.m. honors dead members. Fiddlers contest July 4 in Roundup Hall offers 40 20 10 prizes. Chuck wagon meals served to current members throughout the gathering.

Lueders will dedicate its new post office at 3 p m on July 2 1967 Postmaster Floyd R Jones announced the dedicatory address will be given by a representative from the 17th District The event will also include a presentation of the post office flag Invitations were issued to U S Senator Ralph Yarborough State Senator David Ratliff and State Representative Frank Calhoun

Lueders Farmers Union Forms Charter At First Meeting

The Lueders Farmers Union held its charter presentation and officer elections at the Lions Club building on June 22 with about 50 attendees. Jay Naaman of Texas Farmers Union presented the charter, and C. E. Newsom was named president with Kenneth Hansen as second vice president and others named to posts. The event featured remarks on agriculture’s future, a program led by Homer Thomas, and city officials including Mayor W. E. Winkles.

Memorial Rites Held Wednesday For Mrs Conway

Memorial services were held at Central Presbyterian Church for Edith W. Conway mother of Mrs. I F Hudson. She died Tuesday morning at Stamford Memorial Hospital after 35 days illness. Burial will be in Forrest Lawn Cemetery Los Angeles on July 7. Calf Roping Contest Set for Sunday in Haskell

A calf roping contest is scheduled for Sunday July 2 at 1:00 PM at the James Powell Arena in Haskell. Local riders and spectators are invited to attend the event.

City Manager May Be Named Here Saturday

Stamford officials expect a new city manager to be chosen at a special council meeting Saturday. Mayor Andrews said several applicants have been interviewed to replace Harry Steenson, who will stay on to assist the transition until the new manager is familiar with duties.

Abandonment Sought of Stamford and Northwestern Rail Line

The Fort Worth and Denver Railway requests ICC permission to abandon the Stamford to Spur line known as the Stamford and Northwestern Railway. The 82 mile route passes through Jones Haskell Kent Stonewall and Dickens counties. An overpass on U S Highway 277 south of Stamford crosses the tracks. No hearing date is set.

Volunteer Fire Chief Thanks Hamlin Stamford for Anson Lake Rescue

Anson Volunteer Fire Department chief Woodrow Simmons thanked Hamlin and Stamford groups and individuals for aiding in the recovery of Edward McGee who drowned at Anson's North Lake Sunday. He praised the quick response and said dragging began within 15 minutes after initial rescue efforts.

Closing Time for Quarter Horse Show Saturday

Deadline to enter the 1987 Texas Cowboy Reunion Quarter Horse Show is Saturday at 6:00 p.m. Halter classes start Monday morning July 3 with one class. A Youth Activities Show for under 18 runs Monday afternoon. Entry not limited to horses. Oil Valuations Drop Again in Jones County

Only five or six residents appeared before the Jones County Commissioners acting as a board of equalization. Valuation engineers Pritchett and Abbott reported oil properties in the county had fallen by 600000, creating a tax loss of about 4200, County Judge Leon Thurman said.

Entries in Sponsor Contest Reach All-Time High

The cowgirl sponsor contest set a record with 63 entrants on Wednesday morning, with Jack Mills noting a possible one or two more. The top ten times advance to the finals Tuesday night, while the morning slots fill with the rest. Notable sponsors include Judy Freeman who does not compete. Read lists show participants from Abilene to Stamford and Snyder with numerous ranches and businesses represented.
