Rev. W G Fletcher writes on rubber trees in equatorial regions. A tiny seed migrating into a host tree becomes a parasitic vine that grows roots to Earth, wraps the host, and over a century slowly chokes the giant, a dramatic natural warning.
Stamford calls for a Protestant temperance rally to finish forming the local Women's Christian Temperance Union unit started six weeks ago. A gathering is set at the First Baptist Church on Wednesday, June 29 at 3 30 p m with signatures from Mrs W G Fletcher and Mrs John Estes urging enrollment of supporters of prohibition enforcement or repeal conditional on a substitute. A program includes devotional, song, violin solo and organizational steps.
The Rotary Club discussed causes and cures for the low mood at a noon meeting. A J Swenson outlined three causes: wild speculation, excessive borrowing, and fund withdrawal from productive industry for non taxable bonds. He urged lower taxes and rates as prerequisites for relief. T A Upshaw echoed, saying individuals must solve the depression themselves, no Moses to lead out. Visitors included Galen McKinney Karl Wolff and Ike Hudson.
Abilene reports the Lueders Encampment will rely on volunteer speakers and staff with no pay. Funds come from car registrations to sustain grounds and meals priced to attract attendees. The event aims for a 2000 Sunday School crowd led by Andrew Allen and Grace Conn, closing Rev. J. Henry Littleton’s third year as pastor.
Rev W G Fletcher, attending the pastor's school in Dallas, writes he will return to Stamford to conduct services at St John’s Methodist Church next Sunday. He notes 250 preachers from Texas and Oklahoma are at the school. Rev Marvin Boyd of McMurry College preached at both Sunday services and spoke to the Men's Brotherhood Class.
The American will designate next week’s issue as Texas Cowboy Reunion Number. Several hundred extra copies will be printed for cowboys pioneer cattlemen sponsors and others attending the reunion. The paper may have extra pages depending on advertising patronage and will include full information about the reunion and advertising of interest to Stamford’s attendees.
John W. McCloud engineer for a Wichita Valley motor car was slightly hurt when his car hit a threshing machine owned by Arnold Douthit about one mile north of the city limits on Saturday. Marvin Harvey jumped from the toolbox to safety. the motor car sustained minor damage and continued. The thresher was nearly ruined, Travis Smith driving the tractor remained uninjured, and McCloud received care at Stamford Sanitarium before returning home to Wichita Falls.
The Daily Vacation Bible School at St John’s Methodist Church opened Monday with seventy pupils and by Thursday more than 150 attended regularly. Students work for a diploma to be awarded Friday July 1. Bible study is presented in drama each morning with other features planned by Mrs N M Phy. An outing for all enrolled is planned for Friday afternoon meeting at 7 pm at the church and then to Harmon Park for games and refreshments. Additional assistants include Leta Mae Middleton Ruth Tunnell Dorothy Ruth Culbreath Martha Jane Bryant Irene Rucker Alice Lyles and Mrs N M Phy.
The United States Civil Service Commission warns the public against paying for coaching courses for federal civil service exams. Some schools take money under false pretenses. A purveyor faces indictment in Iowa for false representation. more prosecutions are expected. Vacancies in federal service remain few, filled by transfers or reinstatees where practicable.
G E F Dent of Hull England was arrested on threats charges and refused bail stating he is very happy in jail. He remains in custody while authorities pursue the case.
About 100 boys attended a Harmon Park meeting Tuesday night to organize new Boy Scout troops in Stamford. One troop was formed sponsored by the American Legion with a nucleus for two more, to be sponsored by the Exchange Club and the Rotary Club. The event featured games and an archery demonstration by existing troops. Dr. E. P. Bunkley and L. W. Johnson gave brief talks. Lemonade was served.
A timely rain fell across the territory Monday night, helping maize and other crops. Stamford registered 1.43 inches, with high winds damaging ripe wheat and oats but not heavily. Some areas report hail damage, though Stamford saw none.
The Women’s Missionary Society of St John’s Methodist Church held a Guest Day program Monday afternoon. Mrs. Fletcher spoke on women's work in Methodism, with Miss Baird presenting posters. A play reenacted a 1978 Nashville event, plus a world sisterhood display and a deaconess sketch. Over fifty women attended, and refreshments followed.
New Officers for the Eastern Star Lodge were installed at the regular meeting held at the lodge hall. Thirteen entries have been received for the grand opening parade of the Texas Cowboy Reunion. Prizes include 10 dollars for best commercial entry and 10 dollars for best individual entry, 5 dollars for best child under 12, and a cowboy suit for best junior cowboy. The parade starts at 1 p.m. July 4 with lighter parades on the next two days.
The Red Shirts beat the All-Stars 9 to 7 as Bill Ray sparked a late hitting spree after leading 7 2 in the seventh. Business Men won 4 to 1 over the Barbers with Samuels driving in two runs. Barbers and All-Stars split a pair of tight games with late innings deciding both outcomes. The standings show Red Shirts 10 2 833, Business Men 8 8 .72, All-Stars 5 6 455, Barbers 012 .000.
Rev. Joe Strothers announced Avoca Methodist Church will host a quarterly conference this Sunday. Presiding elder Rev. G. S. Slover will preach at 11 am and a basket lunch will be served at noon before the afternoon session.
West Texas towns select sponsors for the Texas Cowboy Reunion to be held July 4 5 and 6. Sponsors ride in the parade wearing cowgirl costumes and are honored at a rodeo arena ball. Prizes include riding boots and spurs.
