Rubber Farms In Tropics Source Of Heavy Losses
Rev. W G Fletcher argues rubber ventures in Malay Straits failed due to human factors, not climate. He notes Americans funded land grabs, cleared jungles, and relied on cheap native labor, while nature and logistics ruined many plantations and left stockholders with heavy losses.

W. W. Kennedy Severely Burned in Carbide Gas Explosion
W. W. Kennedy, operator of a boiler repair shop on East Rotan Street, suffered severe facial and eye burns last Friday afternoon when carbide gas in a filling station tank ignited after a nearby match was struck. Kennedy, being treated in Fort Worth by an eye specialist, is expected to retain some sight in both eyes though one may be weakened. The accident occurred at G. C. Carothers filling station at the corner of North Swenson and East Moran as Kennedy prepared to take over the station, filling the generator with water from a hose. John Dickinson stood nearby when he was asked to strike a match to see into the tank. Water and fire blew into Kennedy’s face, with the water likely reducing the blast impact. He is expected to remain in Fort Worth about two more weeks.
