Terracing for Better Yields Cited by Lane in California Creek
Noah S. Lane of the North Paint Creek group in the California Creek Soil Conservation District argues terracing for soil and moisture conservation raises yields. His 140 acre wheat field yielded 900 bushels in 1945 and 1200 in 1946 before terracing. this year 2800 bushels were harvested, with Lane estimating terraces added about 800 bushels compared to an unterraced farm. He notes rye and vetch cover crops improved nutrition and yields. Otis Miller of Funston Soil Conservation group and A and M College of Texas reports vetch on sandy land resembling a sea of blue and plans to plant more vetch and rye next year.
