Construction advances on the Stamford Refining Company plant in the southwestern city area led by F W Peckham. Targeted to begin operations by July 1 with a daily capacity around 500 barrels of crude oil as tanks and a gasoline still are installed. Wichita Valley Railway to build a siding to serve the facility.
The Country Club course in West Texas, now with grass greens and fairways rebuilt at about 1500 dollars, opens Monday to members and guests. E V Hardwick, club president, invites all to visit. Bill Scott, greens committee chair, will oversee the opening with no formal ceremonies planned. A resident pro, Shanty Hogan, previously employed for instruction, may support future tournaments.
R C McClellan aged 70 died at the family home on North Anson Beecoe Me shortly after midnight and was buried in Oakland cemetery near Custer. Funeral services will be held at 5 pm with Church of Christ officiating. Survivors include the widow five daughters two sons and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren with several siblings and nieces.
Boy Scouts of Troop 40 and scoutmaster F. W. Pauling are holding their annual summer camp at the Flat Top cabin on the mountain this week. The camp opened Sunday afternoon and runs through Saturday with regular activities and classes. Recreational features supplement the program and a Court of Honor closes the week Friday night, open to the public.
Mrs. J. R. Sledge, president of United Charities, appealed this week for clothing of all kinds with emphasis on children’s garments. Donors can bring items to 278 North Swenson Avenue or call to arrange collection.
Valentine Bland was called to Ennis Wednesday of last week to attend the funeral of her friend Mrs. Will Wood.

Phelps 71 a Stamford physician who died of a heart attack at his home on South Anson Street He was born February 11 1865 in Giles County Tennessee and practiced in Forreston Eula Dundee before moving to Stamford Survivors include his widow two sons a daughter and a deceased infant sister and brothers with pallbearers named for the service

Mrs. H. E. Bass aged 37 died at Stamford Sanitarium after a long illness. Funeral at First Baptist Church with Rev. H. S. Hinson. burial in Highland Cemetery. Formerly Miss Ethel Blankenship born Blum October 19 1898. Survived by husband two daughters Oleta and Mary Ruth two sons L. F. Bass and Billie Jack Bass, a brother D. S. Blankenship and half sister Mrs. Bu Storm, and several relatives.
Boy Scouts in Stamford submit 500 word essays on The Texas Rangers for a Texas Centennial Exposition contest. Judge King Vidor will award an all expense tour to the exposition and $25 cash. Prize also includes a deluxe autographed volume by Walter Prescott Webb.
T M Rankin 78 longtime resident dies at his son Jim Rankin's house in the McConnell community shortly after midnight Wednesday. Funeral set for Friday at 4 PM Kinney Funeral chapel with burial in Highland Cemetery. Born May 7, 1858 in Texas, he lived in Stamford area about 25 years and in McConnell about a year. Survived by son and two brothers Will Rankin Jewett and Thad Rankin Spur. wife preceded him in death.
Mr and Mrs Jack Duncan have returned to their Shreveport Louisiana home after visiting Duncan parents Mr and Mrs J E Duncan and other relatives.
Of 177 veterans in Stamford, 113 had sent bonds back to Dallas for cashing. Bonds certified and returned total $50,200. About 200 packages remain to be delivered. 189 received, 12 uncalled for. First checks likely Friday. average payout estimated at $55, totaling about $111,000 for 200 local veterans. Bonds arrived 24 hours early, at 8 AM Monday. delivery began at noon.
Panhandle launches a new service station at 702 North Swenson with 24 hour operations set to begin Saturday at 6 am. J T Stell says it will be a one stop station offering full traveler courtesy and Panhandle products, with C G Capps out due to injury and Jack Garner day manager along with S A Moser as night manager.
Miss Dorothy Baker, chosen by the Stamford Chamber of Commerce, will represent Stamford at the Midland Rodeo show June 26 27 and 28. She will ride the horse Midnight in the parade and cowgirl events wearing a black and white outfit with white boots.
Captain F M Locke describes modern war implements at a Rotary Club address after returning from Fort Benning. He notes full motorization of all services including cavalry artillery and machine gun units and asserts future wars will be won on the ground. Rotary committee appointments for the new year are announced, with names listed for club and project leadership.
A full page photograph of a Swenson ranch scene appears on the back cover of the Salvation Army War Cry Texas Centennial edition. Copies will be sold by Salvation Army workers here Saturday.
The American plans a July 1 edition focused on Stamford history for the Cowboy Reunion. Staff will expand to include an additional six-person crew and featured historical material with pictures. Three thousand copies will be printed with extra copies at 10c each mailed nationwide.
The thirteenth annual Lueders Baptist Encampment will run from Monday through June 2 on the river near Lueders. Dr. E D Head of Houston and Dr. J B Tidwell of Waco headline talks with music by Prof and Mrs I E K Reynolds. Daily schedule includes directed play, swimming, and a mass social, with varied classes and a Sunday program by Hardin-Simmons University.
Reading fragments show a family group from Abilene including Mrs Felton Underwood her mother Mrs Ish Mae Hampton and two siblings. The text is incomplete but indicates kinship ties and a listed surname Underwood.
Texas Cowboy Reunion Association hosted a spring round-up in Stamford with a Friday business meeting at Stamford Inn and a noon luncheon at the Bunkhouse. Officers named committees for July reunion events and J W Hudson joined as horse wrangler amid a Seymor fiddle band filled square dance crowd.
A film booth fire at the Grand Theater confined to the booth, stopping one matinee. The 4 pm Tuesday show proceeded after flames were contained. Loss focused on the film stock. booth and machinery damage covered by insurance. No injuries reported.
The Burlington System owned miniature passenger train will appear in Stamford during the Texas Cowboy Reunion and join the grand parade on July 4. Gen. Joan A. Hul en of the Wichita Valley Railway confirms the schedule in a letter to Texa Cowboy Reunion president W. G Swenson, stating the train will also be used at Denver next Saturday June 20 and will not be retained for Stamford only.
