Texas Population Poised to Surpass New York by 1990
Texas may overtake New York in population if current growth continues, says a Texas A&M analysis of 1980 census data. Texas rose from 11.2 million in 1970 to 14.2 million in 1980, a 27 percent gain, vastly outpacing national growth and dwarfing New York’s loss of residents. The study notes Frost Belt versus Sun Belt shifts and positions Texas among California and Florida in total populations.
