First National promotes Smith to new board post

The First National Bank of Stamford named Earl Smith vice-chairman of the board at the June 10 meeting. Senior vice president Jim Parker was named bank president, replacing Smith. Smith joined in 1960 and has served as president twice, while Parker arrived in 1979 from Bridgeport and has eight years in banking. The eight-director board, led by Chairman Mike Stinson of Fort Worth, has guided the bank since 1900.

Stamford panel weighs by pass plan and costs

Stamford city leaders heard THD official Riley Walker present a 524000 by pass project cost for Highway 277 relocation through the city. The plan would cover land 70000 improvements 288400 and utilities 165000 with the city paying 10 percent and the THD 90 percent, a public hearing slated for late September to decide if it will proceed.

June cools summer with rare front and rain

A rare June cool front brought cooler highs and light rain to Stamford Monday afternoon and evening. Temperatures dipped to 57 in the Tuesday morning low and 54 Wednesday. Rain on Monday increased the June total to 2.58 inches, below the normal 3.11 inches.

Ma Bell seeks large Texas rate hikes in local service

Southwestern Bell asked the Public Utility Commission to approve local rate increases up to 14.40 per month for one party business service and 5.45 for residence, with higher party line and private line charges. The move targets intrastate revenues up 15.8 percent to fund Texas growth and ensure cost coverage amid inflation. Roth cited Texas’ rapid growth, a 7 plus billion intrastate investment, and a need to earn above the current 8.49 percent return.

Stamford Wins June City Tax Rebate From State Comptroller

Stamford received its June rebate of 5 440 00 from the state comptroller in Austin. The city posted 5 055 00 the prior year and 69 116 00 for 1981, up five percent from 1980. Nearby towns Haskell Hamlin Knox City and Anson also received rebates ranging from 1 390 00 to 4 690 00 as Abilene totaled 365 220 00 statewide rebates reached 310 700 000 in 1981 led by Houston at 5 9 million. The city sales tax is collected with state tax and returned monthly by the comptroller.

Stamford Telephone Rates Through the Years

The 1960 rates showed residential service at 5.00 and business one party lines at 9.00. Current figures rise to 6.70 for residential and 14.95 for business with proposed Southwestern hikes nearly doubling the basic bill. The prior increase occurred last July when Bell sought 326.3 million and later bonds of 152.8 million faced a 114.3 million upheld by the Texas Supreme Court. Refunds from Bell continue through September.
