An organizational meeting for Stamford Bass Club is set for Monday night June 19 at 7 30 p m in city hall council chambers. Officers will be elected and a bass tournament planned for late June. Members unable to attend can join by calling Randall Graham or Roy Bounds.
Raymond Ender, a Sagerton area farmer in his late 50s, remained in critical condition Wednesday at Hendrick Medical Center Abilene with a gunshot to the left chest and upper abdomen. He was shot by a 12 gauge shotgun about 5 p.m. Tuesday and was transferred to Abilene from Stamford Memorial Hospital. Haskell County Sheriff's Department and the district attorney's office continue the investigation.
Robert Thomas poses with a five foot sixty two inch rattler slain near noon on Thursday June 8 at Bobby Fay Anders wrecking yard in Far North Swenson. The snake bore sixteen rattlers some broken off two fangs on the left side and one on the right about three quarters of an inch. Thomas says he has killed three rattlers previously and around fifteen have been slain at the same location.
Stamford hosts the fifth annual Art Foundation Exhibit and Sale during the 48th Texas Cowboy Reunion from June 29 to July 4 at the rodeo grounds. Thirty seven artists from Texas and nine other states participate while local residents assist in art selection sales and staffing. New officers include Dr. I. F. Hudson as president and G. C. Carothers Jr. as vice president with Eugene Swenson as treasurer. several new directors join the board and committees oversee hanging, sales, and preview events.
Stamford area students join 13 participants in a 8:00 to 10:30 a.m. five day weekly auto mechanics program, funded by West Central Council of Governments with instructor Johnny Rocha of Knox City. A $1,280,145 general fund budget was approved. several resignations and new hires for Title I and remedial staff were approved. bids to reroof the high school gym were authorized. multiple policies were adopted. a $1000 time warrant with interest is to be paid to First National Bank from delinquent tax collections.
The Stamford area sees a very small wheat crop this year as farmers shift to planting late cotton and little wheat enters local elevators. Jones-Haskell Grain Coop reported about 400,000 pounds by Tuesday afternoon, roughly four railroad cars, likely more to come. Last year the elevator received 470 railroad cars. N. J. Goodman delivered the first wheat May 26 at $2.90 per bushel, with market near $2.75 by midweek.
Information is needed for the Stamford High School homecoming mailing list for the fall. Don Harvey, president, is sought at 101 Sherry Lane or 773-2618, and Mrs. Vernon Lovvorn, secretary, at Rt. 3 Box 82 or 773-2107. Homecoming is set for October 13 to 15. requests include ex-student class rolls and current addresses.
Stamford Day Care Center has received gifts including toys books blocks dolls and doll furniture from Fairest Davis Liz Apple and others. Donations in memory of Warren E Miller were given by multiple local residents and couples including Upshaw Alyce Daniel and Dr and Mrs George Pryor among others.
The Stamford Chamber of Commerce Retail Trade Committee announced plans for a downtown street dance to kick off the Texas Cowboy Reunion Rodeo on June 29 featuring Roland Smith and The Roadrunner of Abilene. They will also introduce an Employee of the Month award open to any employee, with nomination boxes in local firms and offices. A Stamford Salute to a Business of the Month will run monthly in the Stamford American, and an International Day is scheduled for October with multi national food and booths.
Thirty youth with seven adult sponsors left Stamford at 6 45 AM Wednesday for a Montana Mission Tour. They will lunch with the Douglas Yarbroughs at Trinity Baptist in Amarillo, stay nights in Colorado Springs and Cody, visit Air Force Academy and Denver Mint, tour Yellowstone and Bozeman, split at Great Falls for Browning and Fort Benton, with Browning group aiding Indian Reservation children and Fort Benton led by interim pastor Jay Horne. The trip includes Glacier National Park hopes and crossing into Canada.
Anson county commissioners appointed Joe Edd Boaz of Anson as county attorney, succeeding Raymond Hollabaugh of Stamford who held the post three years. Boaz won 4-0 after both candidates sought the district attorney job for the 259th Judicial District. Hollabaugh had announced for DA late last year and vacated the county attorney post.
Stam ford caregiver Fairest Davis 73 ends 23 year career. She leaves Stamford with her youngest grandson Jason Dipple 11 and plans to live with daughter Alpha Maloney in Pensacola after visiting Amarillo. She cared for two generations, often 15 to 20 children daily, and donated toys to Stamford Day Care Center.
