Stenholm Wins Democratic Nomination for 17th District

Charles W. Stenholm of Stamford defeats A. L. Rhodes of Abilene by a two to one margin to secure the Democratic nomination for congressman in the 17th District. Stenholm, a 39 year old local farmer, collects 46,609 votes (almost 68 percent) of about 67,000 cast. Rhodes earns 22,324 (about 32 percent). The nominee will face Bill Fisher of Abilene in the general election.

Two non-natives named as Texas Cowboy Reunion host and sponsor

Insaf Saab born in Lebanon and Fareed Hassen of Stamford named official hostess and sponsor for the 48th Texas Cowboy Reunion. Saab, who moved to the area in 1968, arrived in Stamford with her husband in 1968 after meeting in 1968 and became a citizen in 1973. Hassen is the Stamford-based sponsor, wife of Erin Leaf, a local businessman. Saab recalls her first rodeo in Houston in 1969 and says she admires bull riding star Walt Garrison. She plans to host visiting sponsors and contribute to community activities while maintaining interest in schools, business climate, and hospital volunteer work.

Cindy Stenholm named Stamford Artist of the Month

Cindy Stenholm has been chosen as Stamford Chamber of Commerce Artist of the Month for June. About 17 oil and pastel paintings will hang in Chamber offices all month, inviting public viewing. She began painting to decorate her home after moving in 1967 and learned from Paula Vaden Carlton and Mazie Sioris among others.
