New sewer plant in Stamford starts handling waste

Stamford's 50 year old sewer plant is out of operation and a new million dollar facility is in use though minor items remain. The old system built in 1924 is supplemented by the new plant tied into it at the final stage of treatment. The project cost about $1 million, with $225,000 local funds and the rest from federal or state sources.

Meeting on M-44 usage set for Tuesday in Haskell

A training session for farmers and ranchers on using the M-44 with potassium cyanide for coyote control will be held at the Community Building of the Haskell National Bank in Haskell on Tuesday, June 18, at 2 p.m. Attendance is restricted to those who complete the training. For more information, contact the county agent's office.

Cotton growers meet Cotton Incorporated officials

A group of cotton growers from Anson and Stamford met June 12 with Cotton Incorporated officials to hear progress reports across agricultural research textiles and marketing. Herman Propst of Rolling Plains chaired the forum arranged by producer groups. Four Cotton Incorporated officers spoke on research sales and economics.

Hit and run victims in Stamford area Teens injured in May 31 incident

Two Stamford area teenagers, Herman Polk Jr and Kenneth Buerger Jr, both 15, were injured in a May 31 hit and run east of Stamford and listed in good condition at Stamford Memorial Hospital Wednesday morning.

NYC forms being taken until Friday

Deadline for Neighborhood Youth Corps applications in Stamford is 5 p.m. Friday June 14. Open to youths 14 to 18 who qualify for the summer job program. City H R Macomber says eight jobs available for ten weeks through August 17. Enrollees work 32 hours weekly with one paid holiday on July 4. Applications available and returned at City Hall.

Shot Clinic Set Next Tuesday At Community Kindergarten

The monthly clinic sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce and Texas Department of Health will be held next Tuesday June 18 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Community Kindergarten. Stamford Memorial Hospital nurses will administer vaccines for several diseases.

Richards to sit on convention panel

C O Richards a Stamford farmer and Bethel Lutheran Church member will attend two national conventions within the next month. He will be one of six delegates from the Texas Louisiana Synod of the LCA to the national convention July 3 10 in Baltimore Maryland. He joins a panel reacting to Dan Rather’s address on July 4 with Rev Malcolm L Minnick Jr Mrs Margaret Jones and Dr Margaret Ermarth. Richards also plans to attend a MENSA convention in Chicago June 21 23 after a prior church event.

Industrial team visits Stamford for site tour

An unnamed industrial selection team visited Stamford last Thursday June 6 to view potential plant sites. Chamber of Commerce Manager Bill Koon said the industry is considering more than a dozen locations and would need 30 to 40 acres of level land for an 180,000 to 200,000 square foot facility employing up to 300 people. Water use is projected at 105,000 gallons daily with 90,000 gallons discharged, which Stamford’s sewage system could handle.

New pastor to be feted at tea today

New minister Ross I Dunn of St John s United Methodist Church will be honored at a get acquainted tea this afternoon in the church parlor from 5 30 to 7 30. He and his wife Nita and their three sons Mark Tim and Daniel will attend. Dunn born in Southland studied at McMurry College and Duke University and comes from Wheeler First United Methodist Church. Mrs Dunn is a Moran native who also attended McMurry and has taught in Wheeler schools. Stamford Jr Sheriff s Posse will ride in the Rotan rodeo parade Thursday.

Stamford City Council Approves Street Changes and Paving Plans

The council reviewed several northwest paving plans with cost estimates for Handlan Street and Haskell to Oliver streets, plus Oliver to two blocks west of Swenson. They requested figures for Reynolds Street and for portions of FE Oliver and Trinity linking Texas Street. A business group opposed rerouting U.S. 277 west of downtown, while county officials supported it. Ordinances 486 and 487 passed first readings. appointments to Housing Authority were made and Decker Construction received a 30 day sewer plant extension. A proposed tie in to FM 142 water lines was discussed requiring a contract with city water. Tax rolls were adjusted.

Fiddlers Contest Sought for Oldtimers Association Event

The Oldtimers Association of the Texas Cowboy Reunion seeks non professional fiddlers over 50 for a July 4 contest in Roundup Hall with $125 in prizes. Registration at 9 am. contest starts 9 30 am. Judges named and afternoon square dances follow with no public charge.

Stamford school board seeks head coach applicants

In a regular meeting last Thursday night the Stamford school board accepted the resignation of Bo Wilson who served as head coach and athletic director for the last year. Wilson left to take a similar post at Sweeny, a Class AAA school near Houston. Superintendent Woodie Beene was authorized to seek applicants to fill the vacancy. Beene has talked to some candidates and plans more interviews but no hire yet. The board approved purchasing a 15 passenger van style bus similar to last year’s, and a 1974-75 calendar was approved. Also approved were two $1000 time warrants from delinquent tax funds. Application was approved for USDA surplus commodities for the lunch room. The board also established administrative procedures to hold athletic and academic awards assemblies at year end open to the public.

Stamford Historical Society Meets Friday Evening

Regular monthly meeting of the Stamford Historical Society will be at the Lions Club building Wednesday at 7 p.m. The group, now over 126 members, invites visitors and members. Tommy Rector, vice president and program chair, will discuss early automobile models and members will share experiences with gas buggies. Rector will display early pictures for passing around and attendees may bring artifacts or memorabilia.
